Obama Gives These Job Creators A Break

Obama

The primary reasons the real unemployment rate continues to stand above 13 percent are the burdens of Obamacare and President Obama’s relentless campaign of vilification against business and job creators.

However, a recent audit by the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security found that the Obama administration is giving one group of job creators, those who hire illegal aliens and get caught, a real break.

Under President Obama, the federal government was supposed to be putting more emphasis on going after employers who hired illegal aliens. To that end ICE specifically announced that it would conduct more audits of the I-9 forms all businesses are required to keep to demonstrate that their employees are authorized to work in the U.S.

The goal, as our friend Stephen Dinan of The Washington Times observed, was to try to ramp up pressure on businesses to hire only legal workers.

The reality is far, far different from the goal.

According to the findings of the Inspector General’s audit, the Obama administration regularly gives a break to businesses that hire illegal aliens, reducing their fines by an average of 40 percent from what they should be, and suggesting that the government could be doing a lot more to put pressure on unscrupulous employers.

In one example cited by Dinan, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement cut one business’s fine from $4.9 million to slightly more than $1 million — a 78 percent drop.

We may be wrong about this, but we’d like to see the results of a similar audit of say the EPA’s administrative proceedings to see how many farmers, ranchers and small businesses the environmental enforcers have given a similar break.

“The knowledge that fines can be significantly reduced may diminish the effectiveness of fines as a deterrent to hiring unauthorized workers,” the inspector general said.

It is worth exploring for a second what exactly a fine for hiring an illegal alien is supposed to deter.

Certainly it is in a general way supposed to deter illegal immigration by making giving a job to an illegal a crime. But it is also supposed to punish the theft of wages from American workers that occurs when an employer hires an illegal worker.

And this theft of wages is real.

Since President Obama took office, federal welfare spending has increased by 41 percent, more than $193 billion per year. Despite this government largess, more that 46 million Americans continue to live in poverty. Despite nearly $15 trillion in total welfare spending since Lyndon Johnson declared war on poverty in 1964 the poverty rate now stands at 15 percent, and is perilously close to where we began almost 50 years ago.

This economic stagnation in the first steps up the economic ladder coincides with a vast wave of illegal immigration.

The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that, in the 1980s, the net advance of the U.S. undocumented population was at 130,000 per year, increasing to 450,000 per year from 1990–1994, further increasing to 750,000 per year from 1995–1999, and staying at 700,000–850,000+ per year since about 2000.

Each of those illegal aliens represents a paycheck or a raise taken away from an American worker.

And the Republican establishment and the cheap labor wing of Big Business want to continue to suppress wages and job growth for American citizens by granting amnesty to millions of illegal aliens and opening the borders to more low-skilled immigrants?

To help rebuild the American economy it is absolutely vital to the future of your country that you contact your Representative to demand that he or she sign the ConservativeHQ “No Amnesty Pledge” before the the house Republican “leadership” caves on amnesty.
