Is the Obama – Corker Iran Nuclear Weapons Deal Falling Apart?

Illinois Republican Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-6) may have just punched a hole in the sham vote set-up to approve the Obama – Corker Iran nuclear weapons deal, and exposed the hypocrisy of the Capitol Hill Republican “leadership” in the process.

Peter RoskamRoskam, co-chair of the House Republican Israel Caucus, raised a question of the privileges of the House of Representatives demanding access to two side agreements negotiated between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as required by the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 (the Corker – Cardin bill).

Pursuant to that law, the measure directs the House Parliamentarian to not recognize the 60-day congressional review period until the side agreements are transmitted to Congress. It also prohibits the President from lifting statutory sanctions against Iran until Congress has the opportunity to both fully review the Iran nuclear weapons treaty (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA) and related documents, including side agreements, and to vote on a disapproval resolution.

In introducing the Resolution Rep. Roskam said, “In May, the House and Senate overwhelmingly passed and President Obama signed into law the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, which requires the Administration transmit to Congress all documents related to the JCPOA —including side agreements—prior to a 60-day review period and subsequent vote. A day after the nuclear accord was announced, reports surfaced that Iran and the IAEA struck two side agreements related to Tehran’s past nuclear work. In clear violation of federal law, repeated requests from leading Democrats and Republicans to review the side agreements were rebuffed by the Obama Administration. Congressional briefings provided by Administration officials are a legally insufficient substitute for providing the actual text of these documents. Therefore, I raise a question of the privileges of the House insisting that, until the Administration complies with the law, Congress should not vote. All Members of Congress, regardless of their position on the nuclear deal, should demand the robust and transparent review process necessary to cast a fully informed vote.”

Now here’s the key interplay between Roskam’s resolution and the Corker – Cardin bill that is causing the establishment Republican Capitol Hill “leadership” so much heartburn. The Corker – Cardin bill says this about what needs to come before Congress for disapproval:

“Not later than 5 calendar days after reaching an agreement with Iran relating to the nuclear program of Iran, the President shall transmit to the appropriate congressional committees and leadership—(A) the agreement, as defined in subsection (h)(1), including all related materials and annexes;”

“The term ‘agreement’ means an agreement related to the nuclear program of Iran that includes the United States, commits the United States to take action, or pursuant to which the United States commits or otherwise agrees to take action, regardless of the form it takes, whether a political commitment or otherwise, and regardless of whether it is legally binding or not, including any joint comprehensive plan of action entered into or made between Iran and any other parties, and any additional materials related thereto, including annexes, appendices, codicils, side agreements, implementing materials, documents, and guidance, technical or other understands, and any related agreements, whether entered into or implemented prior to the agreement or to be entered into or implemented in the future;”

Meaning Obama and the establishment Republican “leaders” have not even complied with the provisions of Senator Bob Corker’s treasonous giveaway of the Senate’s power to consent to treaties.

And behind Rep. Roskam’s resolution lurks another threat to the sham battle that the Republican establishment set-up to facilitate the Obama – Corker Iran nuclear weapons deal; the House Freedom Caucus is prepared to withhold their votes if GOP leaders don’t delay the Iran disapproval resolution, HFC members are discussing voting down the rule for the resolution on Wednesday.

“I think the plan is just to say that there’s a law on Corker-Cardin, it hasn’t been followed, we can’t ignore it, so to continue on with a vote in light of the administration not adhering to the law would be erroneous and really usurp the authority of Congress,” Mark Meadows told CQ Roll Call on Tuesday night after an HFC meeting in the basement of Tortilla Coast.

If Speaker Boehner and the other “leaders” of the House Republican Conference do not support Rep. Roskam’s resolution it will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they have been in on this scam from the beginning and they never had any intention of actually giving Obama’s nuclear weapons agreement with Iran the kind of careful review it merits.

I called to thank the congressman

this morning. To let him know he has support from another 'blue' state and I'm sure from the other 48 as well! I hope everyone will take a minute or two to do the same thing. These brave members of Congress should know that everyday Americans all across the country are behind their efforts.

I urge the ENTIRE leadership to stand before the House of Representatives (and the Senate as well) and resign! Their incompetence in handling the majority we voted in for them is appalling and there is no other option! I don't want just the Speaker and Majority Leader out, I want the ENTIRE TEAM OUT!

Call 202.224.3121 and let's jam up the congressional switchboard once again! I am reminded of the "Open your windows and shout 'I won't take it anymore'" scenario! Let's make our disgust with their lack of fortitude known!

Pete Roskam for Speaker!
