Two Days to Save America: Stop Obama’s Gun Grab Defund Gun Control in the CR

Gun control, as a political issue, has never really worked for the Democrats, but that hasn’t stopped President Barack Obama and Democrats like New York Senator Charles Schumer from trying.

So we're now at the point where Obama is considering whether to declare himself the Fuhrer and implement, Obamaby executive fiat, changes which he (and the black-letter law) have conceded required statutory action.

When he has done this in the past with shotgun import bans, ammo bans, 50-state semiauto registration, and de facto implementation of the UN Arms Trade Treaty, Congress has rapidly repudiated him by defunding his efforts.

But whether or not Republican leaders are prepared to do this once again in the Continuing Resolution that must pass by December 11 remains an open question.  Please join us in demanding an end to this dangerous folly by signing our open letter to House and Senate Republican leaders.

After 1994, Bill Clinton conceded that the issue cost the Democrats their generation of control over the House -- and, hence, Clinton's legacy.

In 2000, if you believed the media, Columbine had made gun rights toxic.  Yet, Al Gore lost the White House because the Second Amendment community took Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, West Virginia, New Hampshire, and the Florida Panhandle away from him.

Barack Obama avoided the Second Amendment like the plague in 2008 and 2012 -- but then kick-started talks over the UN Arms Trade Treaty THE DAY AFTER his final election.

But when his phony polls made the mistake of asserting that Newtown had changed the national mood, the Second Amendment community took nine Senate seats away from the Democrats -- and gave Republicans a majority in the House that hadn't existed since the Hoover administration.  This, despite the fraudulent Obama-driven narrative that 92% of the American people rejected groups like Gun Owners of America and the NRA -- and supported gun control.

So it is a little curious that Obama once again grabbed politics' "Third Rail" after the San Bernardino terrorist attack. And it is even more curious that he did so, despite the fact that San Bernardino seemed to totally repudiate the efficacy of California's fascist gun laws.

It was bad enough, for Obama, that the Umpqua Community College shooting happened months after Oregon implemented universal background checks.  And the Colorado Springs shooting followed that state's proud adoption of magazine bans and universal background checks.

But, in the face of the probability that gun control could cost Democrats control of the White House in 2017, Obama ploughed on into the breach.

Why?

Well, the first reason was that, at a time when Obama was working to bring 10,000 Syrian refugees into the U.S. -- with dozens or even hundreds of embedded ISIS terrorists -- Obama erroneously thought that offering to take away guns from the 1.1 million people on his secret "blacklist" would divert criticism.

It turned out that the New York Times decries the no-fly list as "a violation of basic rights," and the LA Times objected to extending "blacklists" to guns over due process concerns.  And when was the last time either of those newspapers failed to "follow orders"?

But perhaps the more significant reason is that Obama understands that the gun lobby derailed the bipartisan ObamaCare talks, killed gun control, killed immigration reform, and brought his legislative momentum -- and his legacy -- to a halt. Like a rabid dog, Obama understands that his legacy is doomed; and he can't avoid trying to bite those he deems as responsible for his misery.

But Obama has a new problem:  Last Thursday, the U.S. Senate decisively defeated the most "low-hanging fruit" of his gun control agenda.  It fell 15 votes short (45-54, out of a required 60 votes) of passing the Feinstein amendment.  And it fell 12 votes short (48-50) of passing universal background checks.

In fact, the Feinstein amendment had become a bit of a laughing-stock, given that her blacklist would have singled out the late Senator Ted Kennedy, and failed to catch either Said Farook or Tashfeen Malik. In addition, Feinstein & Co. made a horrific strategic blunder by trying to add gun control to the reconciliation bill.  Because of the idiosyncrasies of the Byrd Rule, they made it impossible for most squishy Republicans to vote for gun control, even if they wanted to do so.  Because, by doing so, they would have brought down the entire reconciliation bill.

So we will see what happens on Obama’s gun control agenda as Congress considers the Continuing Resolution to fund the government for the next year.

But one thing is clear.  Obama came into office, convinced that he was the messiah.  And because of pro-gun Americans, his more apt Biblical legacy is likely to be "the beast."

Michael Hammond is Legislative Counsel for Gun Owners of America.

We have 2 days to stop Obama and the squishy Republicans of Washington’s inside elite from undermining our Second Amendment rights; it is time to tell Republicans in Congress that we demand an end to the “show votes” and that instead of giving Obama a blank check to pursue his anti-gun agenda they must exercise the power the Constitution gave them to rein-in his anti-constitutional agenda.

We urge you to sign the petition and then contact your Representative and Senators (the Capitol Switchboard is 1-866-220-0044) tell them that it is time for leadership; they must stop Obama from undermining the Second Amendment. Tell them if they fail to use the power of the purse to stop this attack on America’s fundamental constitutional liberties they will have forfeited what little legitimacy they have left.
