Cutting Counterterrorism, Increasing “Clean Tech” Cronyism

There’s an old bit of Washington wisdom that says it doesn’t matter what politicians claim their priorities are, it’s where they spend the money that tells you what they think is really important.

So with that in mind we can say of Obama’s final budget that humanitarian aid, bailing-out Puerto Rico, more regulation of virtually every sort and grants to cronies through “clean tech” are important, counterterrorism, not so much.

ObamaObama’s budget proposal would reduce funding for counterterrorism programs across the country by nearly $300 million, from $600 million to about $330 million, almost exactly the same amount allocated for the President’s new Solyndra-like “clean tech” program.

Obama’s counterterrorism budget is so bad that even New York’s intensely partisan Democratic Senator Charles Schumer has gone public with his complaints.

"These proposed cuts are ill-advised and ill-timed and they must be reversed. End of story," Schumer said in a statement to The Associated Press. "In light of recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, and the vow by our extremist enemies to launch more attacks on our shores, it makes no sense to propose cuts to vital terror-prevention programs…"

Schumer’s main beef was the cuts to the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) that were in Obama’s proposed 2017 budget released last week by the White House. The UASI helps fund programs in cities across the U.S. to prevent terrorist attacks, or respond to and recover from them.

AP reports that in New York, a portion of the funds are used for the fire department's response training and the NYPD's counterterrorism training programs and the active shooter training course. The money also helps pay for teams that patrol at local airports, transit hubs and waterways. Elsewhere in the New York area, the funds cover the cost of other training exercises, including multi-jurisdictional response drills.

"New York City remains terror target number one and the NYPD relies on these programs to keep us safe," Senator Schumer said.

Senator Schumer’s comment about New York City being “terror target number one” may or may not be true, but it is a sentiment clearly not shared by New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio.

De Blasio just entered into a consent agreement with a group of Muslim activists to walk away from the New York Police Department’s highly regarded counterterrorism study, published in 2007, called “Radicalization in the West: The Homegrown Threat.” As part of the settlement, the NYPD agreed to take the study off its website.

Also as part of the agreement, the NYPD agreed to pay about $2 million in attorney fees to attorneys for Muslims investigated by the intelligence unit.

Yup, you can sure tell where the priorities of President Obama and New York’s Democratic Mayor Bill De Blasio are by where they spend the money of America’s hard-pressed taxpayers, and it isn’t on counterterrorism and keeping Americans and New Yorkers safe from radical Islam.

Avoid Democrat controlled Cities

For most of the last 20 years, especially during the administration of Giulani, and to some extent, Bloomberg, New York has been a relatively safe city to visit.
DiBlasio, on the other hand, is nearly as unhinged as Dinkins- busy making nice with all the wrong people, in the name of avoiding offense.
I'll be minimizing my time in NY until a sensible Republican has been in charge for at least a year.
