The Steady Hand Of Chairman Chuck Grassley

Many observers looked at the first day of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation hearing and saw chaos, with Democrats constantly interrupting Chairman Chuck Grassley and some 70 Leftwing thugs arrested for disrupting the hearing.

But where some commentators, including many in the conservative media, saw chaos caused by Chairman Grassley’s light touch with the gavel, we saw an incisive strategic mind at work that allowed the Democrats to, Grassley letternot only overplay their hands politically, but to have two of their presidential aspirants implode on national TV.

Anyone who saw Democrat Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey make a fool of himself in his “Spartacus moment” by offering up Republicans the opportunity to kick him out of the Senate for releasing confidential documents that Chairman Grassley had already gotten cleared for release, and then votes for Booker for President hasn’t seen the movie “Spartacus.”

Better still was Grassley’s light touch with the gavel in his dealing with another Democratic presidential wannabe – California’s Senator Kamala Harris.

Harris in her snide, condescending prosecutorial manner made great strides toward her apparent goal of replacing Hillary Clinton as the most despised female politician in America.

Like Senator Booker, Senator Kamala Harris took a drubbing on social media with the general consensus being that Satan had spawned a new demon from Hell and placed it in the United States Senate to unlock the final seal described in the Book of Revelation and begin Armageddon.

Nor did the Democrats’ alleged leadership fare much better.  Illinois Democratic Senator Richard Durbin, the #2 Democrat in the Senate, was reduced #MeToo-ing his Far-Left colleagues and trying to cover for Booker by releasing his own tranche of documents and plaintively demanding to be kicked out of the Senate too.

Even better was when Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) said her message to men in the United States is to "just shut up and step up,” thereby alienating the entire non-Beta male population of the country.

Putting these Democrat antics on national TV as their allies in the audience cursed and hurled invective that would have beaten the bleep count on any average segment of “Cops” or the old Jerry Springer Show may have made their increasingly Far-Left base happy, but it was not good optics for the Democrats in the nice people states that decided the 2016 election.

Chairman Grassley, in his wisdom, saw that not getting into a race to the bottom with the Democrats was the best way to give them the opportunity to run off a cliff, which they did with the blissful abandon of those who are both arrogant and ignorant.

But Chuck Grassley’s finest hour appears to have come with the last-minute smear of Judge Brett Kavanaugh that the Democrats attempted using the troubled memory of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

Senator Dianne Feinstein stunned her Congressional colleagues last week when she confirmed she had forwarded to the FBI a letter detailing Christine Blasey Ford’s 36-year old sexual misconduct allegations against Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Senator Grassley has bent over backwards to accommodate Dr. Blasey Ford, even as corroboration of her allegations has gotten thinner and thinner and the likelihood of an ulterior motive, either a personal vendetta, or a political one, or both has gotten stronger.

Grassley said the committee offered Ford "the opportunity to share her story" in a public or a private hearing, or staff interviews, "whichever makes her most comfortable,” even as the two other parties she named as potential witnesses have said unequivocally that they never saw Brett Kavanaugh conduct himself as she alleged, nor did they recall the alleged party where she says the alleged incident occurred.

But Grassley has also gotten tough with California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Committee whose actions put the Blasey Ford story in motion. Feinstein now says she can't be sure of the veracity of everything alleged by the woman accusing Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, though she later emphasized that she finds the witness "credible."

Grassley has now fired-off an official letter to Feinstein requesting her initial, un-redacted version of the material she forwarded to the FBI.

And he has made it clear that there will be no further delays and Monday, September 24 is it, and that she must officially respond by 10:00 am Friday to the Committee’s offer of time to tell her story, and if she intends to testify, she must submit written testimony by Friday morning.

Chairman Grassley is also getting backing from other Republicans, "Monday is her opportunity," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday.

Grassley has now made it clear there will be no further hearing without Dr. Blasey Ford’s testimony. The Chairman said Wednesday a planned Monday hearing on the sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh would likely not go on without accuser Christine Blasey Ford.

Asked about Ford saying she wouldn’t appear on Monday, the chairman indicated it would not go on without the accuser present because the nominee would not know the full scope of allegations against him. If Ford chooses not to speak to the committee, the hearing Grassley had scheduled for Monday would likely be canceled and the panel could move to vote by midweek, multiple media outlets have reported.

We hope that Chairman Grassley maintains the steady hand he has shown so far to bring these proceeding to a swift and fair conclusion, and that if Dr. Blasey Ford chooses not to testify, that there be no further hearings to allow Democrats to engage in a public pillorying of Judge Kavanaugh in a forum where he could neither confront his accuser nor know exactly what he is being accused of.

We urge CHQ readers and friends to call Senators to urge Judge Kavanaugh’s prompt confirmation, starting with four Republicans who need shoring up. RESPECTFULLY urge them to vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh:  Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska (202-224-6665) and Susan Collins of Maine (202-224-2523) are known to be leaning YES but could use a RESPECTFUL call of encouragement to do so. Likewise, while Republican Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona (202-224-4521) and Ben Sasse of Nebraska (202-224-4224).

After those four phone calls we urge you to work your way through the remaining Republican Senators urging them not to be taken in by this “high-tech lynching.”
