Don’t Bet On Centrist Democrats Bringing Pelosi Around On The Wall

Sean Hannity’s newsletter alerted us that a story we had discounted as unlikely may have some legs to it after all.

Hannity reported that a group of centrist Democrats called on Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to make a counteroffer to President Trump’s immigration compromise proposal; saying the left-wing leader needs to end the partial government shutdown.

The group of moderate lawmakers urged Pelosi to schedule a full vote on the president’s border wall proposal in February should they vote to re-open the government.

“We understand that this shutdown was not caused by the 116th Congress, but it is our job to fix it,” said a statement from the group reported by Politico.

“We promised our constituents that we would seek bipartisan solutions, and we feel that this proposal would gain bipartisan support and allow a transparent process to evaluate the true needs of border security and provide much-needed reform to our immigration process,” added the letter.

As things stand now, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has agreed to allow votes on two funding bills sometime today — the president’s “compromise” (which conventional wisdom says won’t get the requisite 60 votes in the Senate, and wouldn’t pass Nancy Pelosi’s chamber even if it could) and a Democratic bill that would simply restore government funding through February 8 (which probably can’t get 60 votes, and which conventional wisdom says Trump probably won’t sign even if it does).

The centrist House Democrats, who say they are sick of political posturing, are pressing Speaker Pelosi to counter Trump’s sure-to-die-in-the-Senate immigration proposal with her own potential compromise.

The group, led by freshman Rep. Elaine Luria of Virginia, is asking the California Democrat to offer Trump a vote on his border wall or some sort of negotiated security package in February if he first signs a bill reopening the federal government, according to a draft of the letter obtained by POLITICO.

It is unclear how many Democrats have signed on to the letter, reported Politico which also reported multiple senior Democratic aides downplayed the draft missive, suggesting their party is sticking together in a vow not to negotiate until after the shutdown is over. Trump has already panned a similar proposal by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of his top allies in the upper chamber.

However, Politico’s Burgess Everett and Rachael Bade suggest the letter being circulated among some lawmakers from red or swing districts, illustrates the pressure they are under to end the shutdown. Pelosi and Schumer have argued that giving in to Trump's desires would be rewarding “bad behavior” or “hostage taking.“ But some Democrats are starting to question that strategy the Politico team reports.

“Give Trump the money," Rep. Collin Peterson, a centrist Democrat from a red Minnesota district, told a local radio station Tuesday. “I’d give him the whole thing… and put strings on it so you make sure he puts the wall where it needs to be. Why are we fighting over this? We’re going to build that wall anyway, at some time.”

Peterson and Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) wrote to congressional leaders and Trump on Tuesday, calling on them to "end the brinkmanship," reopen the government and make a "good faith" effort on border security.

Rep. Peterson’s conclusion that “We’re going to build that wall anyway, at some time” shows that Democrats who are clear-eyed about the crisis on our southern border are willing to talk sense about border security, but that’s not where the political weight in the Democratic Party is right now.

All the political weight in the Democratic Party is on the Far Left right now, and progressives have no interest in compromise with President Trump on the border wall or anything else.

Amanda Marcotte, a politics writer for Salon and author of the book "Troll Nation: How The Right Became Trump-Worshipping Monsters Set On Rat-F*cking Liberals, America, and Truth Itself," best illustrated where the hard Left is coming from in a Wednesday column:

As painful as it is to accept, the only way this shutdown can end is for Trump and his masters at Fox News to realize that the political cost of the shutdown is too high and to give up the fight. All other paths are doomed to fail or, worse, will lead to even more disastrous hostage-taking down the road. Even in the face of economic disaster, Democrats need to maintain their position, which is that no debate about border security can even begin until Trump reopens the government.

Should Democrats kill the Trump proposal – as we believe they will – the President should feel empowered to begin to explore executive action to address the national security crisis at our southern border – including using the military to construct an effective border wall.

We urge all CHQ readers and friends to call the White House at 202-456-1111 or contact the President through this link. Tell President Trump you support his call for a wall and enhanced security on our southern border, and to hang tough – no wall – no deal.
