The Indispensable Rep. Louie Gohmert

Renee Miller and Louie Gohmert
At a time when the elected Republican leaders of the House and Senate regularly fail to lead on the conservative agenda – indeed they are often secretly or openly on the other side – one Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Louie Gohmert, has made himself our indispensable leader and spokesman.

From the border wall, to the right-to-life, to the repeal and replacement of Obamacare, to defending the Second Amendment, to cutting spending there is hardly an issue that Rep. Gohmert has not organized a Special Order, introduced the conservative alternative or taken to the floor to make an impassioned vote-moving speech.

But leadership is more than just being out front when the cameras are on, and Louie Gohmert’s leadership behind the scenes is just as powerful and committed to doing what’s right as it is when the spotlights are on.

A case in point is Rep. Gohmert’s unflagging advocacy for the release and pardon of Sergeant Derrick Miller. Sgt. Miller was serving a Life Sentence at Fort Leavenworth for murder though he acted in self-defense when an Afghan insurgent attempted to take his gun.

Sgt. Miller, one of several American service members wrongly convicted during the Obama administration, came to Rep. Gohmert’s attention through the efforts of his mother, Renee Miller.

After reviewing the facts and the law of the case former judge, now Congressman Gohmert became Sgt. Miller’s tireless advocate. On March 20, 2019 Sergeant Derrick Miller was granted parole and will be released from Fort Leavenworth on May 20, 2019 after having served eight years in military prison.

Sgt. Miller’s release won’t be a lead segment on the network news, or make the front page of The Washington Post or The New York Times, but Renee Miller said this of Rep. Gohmert’s efforts on behalf of her son:

I especially want to thank Congressman Louie Gohmert for his valiant effort to fight for this American Son.  One meeting with Congressman Gohmert is all it took for this good and caring Congressman from Texas to engage on Derrick's behalf. Congressman Gohmert went that extra mile, he attended two of Derrick's hearings and he fought for his release!  I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you live in Texas, you are lucky to have such a devoted and caring Congressman who fights for our brave Sons who fight for us.

Rep. Gohmert, with typical modesty had this to say in response:

It has been my honor to advocate for Sergeant Derrick Miller, who appeared to have the deck stacked against him during the Obama administration while Sgt. Miller worked passionately to defend his fellow soldiers in Afghanistan. After first backing Sgt. Miller’s story, an Afghan interpreter was coaxed into changing his story to testify at trial against Sgt. Miller with promises of U.S. citizenship for himself and his family.  Since prior efforts to get U.S. visas had been denied, he was more than willing to have a U.S. soldier convicted if it meant safety and legalization for them in the U.S.  It was evident that same deck was stacked against Sgt. Miller when witnesses he needed in Afghanistan were not allowed to come testify at his trial in the U.S.

Certainly Sgt. Miller was not guilty of pre-meditated murder as he was originally convicted, which is why I testified at a hearing to modify the conviction so he could become eligible for parole. Then when the Board agreed to modify his conviction, he became eligible for parole. It was my honor to testify once again for him at the parole hearing. The faith in God of Derrick and his mother never wavered during the nine-year ordeal. They are very special people. Derrick’s actions actually saved American military lives for which he not only got no credit; he was sent to prison. But this good news has brought joy for Derrick and those of us who were trying to help him.

Now here’s the real evidence of Louie Gohmert’s indispensable leadership: Sgt. Miller and his mother Renee don’t live in Rep. Gohmert’s district, they aren’t even from Texas, they are from Hagerstown, Maryland.

All too often we must ask CHQ readers and friends to call Congress to protest some anti-conservative action by the so-called leaders of the Republican Party. Today we urge CHQ readers and friends to call Rep. Louie Gohmert’s office (1-866-220-0044) to thank him for his steadfast conservative leadership and especially for his successful efforts to gain the release of Sgt. Derrick Miller.
