Conservatives Ready To Stay Home If Trump Joins Dems On Guns?

Trump Gun Control
“If Republicans abandon the Second Amendment and demoralize millions of Americans who care deeply about Second Amendment rights,” Texas’ Republican Senator Ted Cruz said at a recent breakfast with reporters, “that could go a long way to electing a President Elizabeth Warren.”

“We’re going to see record-setting Democratic turnout. The only element missing is demoralizing conservatives, so they stay home. I hope we don’t do that,” Cruz told the reporters.

According to Niels Lesniewski who was there covering the event for Roll Call, Senator Cruz was responding to a question that specifically referenced a possible deal between the Trump administration and a bipartisan group of senators including Democrats Christopher S. Murphy of Connecticut and Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, as well as Republican Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Amber Athey of The Daily Caller reports that, while the White House has not circulated a bill of its own, the White House and Department of Justice (DOJ) have met with multiple Republican senators and congressmen to shop legislation on expanding background checks consistent with the Manchin-Toomey bill, sources familiar with the effort told the Daily Caller.

The Daily Caller obtained a copy of an “idea sheet” circulating among Republican members, which indicates that the legislation in question would expand background checks to include all commercially advertised unlicensed sales.

You can read Ms. Athey’s scoop through this link.

“Consistent with the Manchin-Toomey draft legislation, a background-check requirement would be extended to all advertised commercial sales, including sales at gun shows,” the handout reads. “Background checks would be conducted either through a [Federal Firearm Licensee] or through a newly-created class of licensed transfer agents.”

Attorney General Bill Barr and White House Legislative Affairs Director Eric Ueland were both present at the Tuesday meetings, which took place on the Hill and included North Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Meadows, Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, and Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley.

One source familiar with the meetings told Ms. Athey that Barr pitched the legislation by warning that a lack of action could electrify the Democratic base prior to the 2020 election. Barr also did not consider the background check legislation a gun control measure, instead painting it as a tool to assist law enforcement in cracking down on gun smugglers, the source explained.

Another person familiar described to Ms. Athey the efforts to get Republicans on board the Manchin-Toomey-Coons language as “superficial,” noting that there was no draft text or other follow-up action promised to them after the meeting.

The legislation would not address straw purchases, noted Ms. Athey in her report. Straw purchases account for nearly half of all illegally trafficked firearms, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

“It [Trump endorsing Democrat gun bills] would also be a serious mistake as a policy matter,” Cruz said, arguing that none of the recent mass shootings would have been stopped by the Democratic legislative proposals. He instead was pushing legislation he has drafted with former Judiciary Chairman Charles E. Grassley of Iowa that is focused on ensuring that federal agencies report all crimes into the existing background check database.

“The far left is pissed off,” Cruz told reporters attending the breakfast. “They hate the president, and that is a powerful motivator.”

There’s no doubt Senator Cruz is right on both the politics and the policy of the Democrats’ gun control bills – none of them will make the Far Left less “pissed off” or make the slightest dent in murders or mass shootings – they are aimed at disarming rural and Red State America, not the criminals and the deranged.

What’s more, we don’t think the President’s advisors necessarily understand what the gun debate is all about from the conservative side.

Certainly, part of it is the details of the policy to which Senator Cruz alluded, but the more important part is the breach of trust that abandoning his promise to defend the Second Amendment would entail.

We’ve already seen, in recent weeks, Republicans who are usually solid limited government constitutional conservatives, like Dan Crenshaw of Texas, say they might support a “red flag” law.

Naturally, Democrats want their gun confiscation bills to pass, but if they can’t pass both houses of Congress this time, they will be just as happy to peel off more Republicans, so that next time they are one step closer to being able to implement their anti-constitutional, anti-liberty agenda – which is why we need to keep hammering House Republicans urging them to hold firm.

You can use the Gun Owners of America website to email your Representative through this link or you can call your Representative through the toll free Capitol Switchboard (1-866-220-0044). Tell your Representative and Senators that the Second Amendment is not negotiable, and then call President Trump via the White House comment line (1-202-456-1111) and tell him that the Second Amendment is not negotiable and you may stay home on Election Day 2020 if he joins Democrats to further restrict your Second Amendment rights.

Staying home in Nov. 2020

How stupid would that be, staying home and not voting is a vote for Socialism and for another failure in the White House following 8 years of Obama.

2nd Amendment

If Trump betrays American gun owners in any way, I CAN ASSURE YOU IT WILL MEAN DEFEAT IN NOVEMBER 2020!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We fully expect to be sc(*&^& over by the dems. But we are sick and tired of being lied to and betrayed by the very people we elected to represent us. If we're going to be burned it will be on the heads of the dems.

Trump, you better wake the hell up and realize this IS THE ISSUE THAT MAKES OR BREAKS THE NEXT ELECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get your priorities straight

I don't care whether the guy is in line with all your political expectations or not. If you are a thinking person, the question you have to ask yourself is, "Would I prefer Elizabeth Warren over this man in the White House?" Cause if you stay home and don't vote, that's the choice you're making. For me, there's lots of stuff I don't care for about Trump, but let's get honest here. Are you willing to let the far left run the show? If not, then let him know how you feel about the various issues, but get out there and enthusiastically support him, because the alternative is too frightening even to consider.

2nd Amendment

I do not own a weapon, but I am a strong 2nd Amendment advocate.  I believe that President Trump IS defending the 2nd Amendment and would have accomplished a lot more if he had the full support of the so-called conservatives in congress.  I agree that some of his advisors don't understand the 2nd Amendment, and I am amazed that the Republicans can't better inform and convince the public that an AR15 IS NOT an "assault weapon" but a simple 22 rifle with a light, hollow stock, the necessity for large capacity magazines in today's world, the history of despot dictators use of gun control, and they are equally as inept at defending the NRA.  I'm 81 years old and I can give a better explanation.  Having said that, I would like to make a statement - ANYONE who sits home for ANY reason and lets a democrat be elected to the Presidency doesn't give a damn about the Constitution, much less the 2nd Amendment.  The democrats will not only TOTALLY destroy the 2nd Amendment, but all the Constitution as well, resulting in the destruction of the United States.
