Grassroots Conservatives Channel Winston Churchill

Congress Lies
Britain’s great statesman and orator Winston Churchill once told the House of Commons that when he was a child he was taken to Barnum's Circus where the exhibit he most desired to see was that described as the Boneless Wonder. “My parents judged that that spectacle would be too revolting and demoralising for my youthful eyes,” said Churchill, who then pointed to Prime Minister Ramsay McDonald and said, “' I have waited fifty years to see the boneless wonder sitting on the Treasury Bench.”

Were Churchill alive today, and if his curiosity about the Boneless Wonder remained unsatisfied, he would need only to stop by the offices of Republican Senators Mike Braun, John Cornyn, Ron Johnson, James Lankford, Mitch McConnell and John Thune to fulfill his youthful curiosity.

What conservatives have been begging for since the 2014 Tea Party wave election brought Republicans back into the majority in the Senate are leaders who will clearly, passionately, and articulately fight for conservative principles.

Unfortunately, in today’s environment just a handful of Republican Senators, or other GOP elected officials, can be relied upon to provide the leadership necessary to confront and defeat the revolution going on in our streets. Most, like Braun, Cornyn, Johnson, Lankford, and so-called Republican leaders McConnell and Thune are much more likely to ignorantly excuse or fecklessly join the Leftist mob.

We are especially disgusted with Senator Braun, whom we endorsed in his Republican primary election, for going on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News program to proclaim his support for the Black Lives Matter movement and his proposed legislation that would have minimized qualified immunity for police officers.

In addition to showing his complete ignorance about the Black Lives Matter movement (his staff should have made sure he read our series “It’s Not A Protest, It’s Not A Riot, It’s A Revolution“ before expressing support for the Marxist revolutionary movement) Braun told Carlson that he felt Republicans need to go after qualified immunity because Democrats were going to "make hay of this" in the 2020 elections.

Beyond arguing that Democrats were going to use qualified immunity as a campaign issue, Senator Braun never made the case that federal legislation ending qualified immunity for police officers is a good idea, or even constitutional given our federal system of government and each state’s jurisdiction over policing and tort liability within the state.

Although Braun later withdrew his name from the legislation his use of the argument that “Democrats will run against us for standing for law and order” remains a low point in Senate Republican bonelessness.

But Senators John Cornyn, Ron Johnson and James Lankford have been doing their best to beat Braun in the race to the bottom.

In June Senator Cornyn joined Far Left Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18) on legislation to make Juneteenth a paid federal holiday. The notion of creating a national holiday commemorating the Republican liberation of slaves held by Democrats has some merit, but we doubt it would be taught that way in today’s Leftist-controlled government schools.

And of course, as the boneless Senator Cornyn is so regularly inclined to do, he justified this idea by joining the Democrats in promoting a lie about the interactions between the police and African Americans: “As the list of black men and women killed by police officers in custody grows, the calls for action are getting louder and louder, as they must, and as they should… There is a clear and urgent need for leaders at every level to come together, and to deliver the change that we need to deliver, in order to match up with our ideals.”

The reality is that killings by police have remained relatively constant over recent reporting periods and that about twice as many white people as black people are killed by police. “In fact, in about 75 percent of police shootings, the decedent is not black,” reported former Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew McCarthy, a columnist with National Review.

And media outlets promoting the “racist cops” narrative are misreading the numbers. For example, it’s frequently reported that 23 percent of those shot and killed by police are black, but black Americans only make up 13 percent of the population.

However, it’s also true that, as Heather Mac Donald, a Manhattan Institute scholar and author of the book “War on Cops” reports, African Americans make up 53 percent of known homicide offenders and commit about 60 percent of robberies. As Ms. MacDonald wrote in the Wall Street Journal, “A solid body of evidence finds no structural bias in the criminal justice system with regard to arrests, prosecution or sentencing. Crime and suspect behavior, not race, determine most police actions.”

But Senator Cornyn never lets facts like those get in the way of a good opportunity to do some race pandering and give people a day off on the taxpayers’ dime.

But it gets worse.

On July 1, Senators Lankford and Johnson filed an amendment to Cornyn’s legislation that would replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth as a new federal holiday.

“Juneteenth is a day in our history that redefined the meaning of freedom and equality in America,” said Sen. Lankford. “Throughout our history, we have strived to become a more perfect union and Juneteenth was a huge step in attaining that goal. We should celebrate these strides on the federal level while remaining cognizant of the impact the existing 10 federal holidays have on federal services and local businesses. We can reduce these impacts by replacing Columbus Day as a federal holiday with Juneteenth, America’s second independence day. I’m hopeful the Senate will support this amendment to celebrate this significant day in our nation’s history.”

Once again, instead of taking the opportunity to show leadership and point out that the Juneteenth liberation announcement was made by Republican general Gordon Granger, fighting to liberate the slaves of Democrats, under the command of a Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, Johnson and Lankford engaged in some boneless race pandering.

Predictably, when the reaction to their idea was negative, especially from Italian Americans and Hispanics who see Christopher Columbus as one of Western Civilization’s greatest visionaries and heroes, Lankford and Johnson withdrew the amendment.

As I observed in my book TAKEOVER, Newt Gingrich did not always adhere to limited government constitutional principles, but however you may see Newt today, as he climbed the leadership ladder his great redeeming qualities as a leader were that he was articulate, an excellent strategist and a fierce partisan.

Newt would wake-up every morning thinking, “What are the four, five, six things I can do today to put the Democrats out of business?”

And then he’d actually go out and do them – it was in his DNA.

Mike Braun, John Cornyn, James Lankford, Ron Johnson, John Thune and Mitch McConnell?

Let’s get real. You never see them go toe-to-toe with Chuck Schumer, Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren, or even the hapless Joe Biden.

Even on issues where our position is the majority opinion and are at the very core of the conservative agenda, such as law and order, you can’t find one of them leading.

Republican leaders have ceded the high ground in the current battle for the soul of America to the Democrats without a fight. Democrats are so far from the mainstream of public opinion in their radical positions in favor of defunding the police, tearing down our monuments, erasing our history and teaching a bizarre form of self-loathing of all things American to our children, that fighting them should be in the DNA of every Republican elected official.

Unfortunately, instead of born fighters, what we have in Mitch McConnell’s Senate Republican Conference are Boneless Wonders like Senators Mike Braun, John Cornyn, Ron Johnson, and James Lankford.

The toll-free Capitol switchboard is (1-866-220-0044). We urge CHQ readers and friends to call Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Whip John Thune to tell them conservatives demand that Republicans politicians stand-up for American culture and history and that you expect them, and the Senate Republican Conference to stand united against the Democrats and their Far Left allies' attempts to destroy it. And while you are on the phone, you might call the offices of Senators Mike Braun, John Cornyn, James Lankford and Ron Johnson to tell them you plan on opposing them and other Republican Boneless Wonders in the next primary election.
