Rick Santorum May Regret Taking the High Road

At a recent campaign event in Missouri, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum pledged to take the high road in his campaign for the Republican nomination for President. But that is a pledge Newt Gingrich made to his regret in Iowa, where his unilateral disarmament allowed his opponents to pound him with unanswered negative ads.

Santorum’s comments echoed a theme he introduced during the Jacksonville, Florida debate where he said, "We want someone who's going to take the high road, who's going to talk about the issues that are important to this country and quit getting down into the gutter and talking about things that have nothing to do with who should be the next President of the United States… I'm sick and tired of candidates who think they have to do anything that's necessary – anything to win an election."

A noble sentiment, but the problem with Santorum’s unilateral disarmament is that, while not as obvious to the media and pundits as the televised carpet bombing Newt Gingrich suffered in Iowa and Florida, Romney’s dismemberment of Rick Santorum has already begun.

In the days after Santorum’s victory in Iowa became apparent, the Romney campaign put a full load of negative direct mail into Florida -- and it was all directed at Santorum.  By one count, five pieces of anti-Santorum mail hit the mailboxes of select Republican primary voters in just seven days.

The problem for Rick Santorum's high road strategy is that in Mitt Romney, he is actually up against a candidate who has proven that he will indeed do anything that is necessary to win an election. And as much as conservatives may hate to admit it, that may be, deep down inside, what Republican voters are looking for.  If that is the case, then Santorum’s unilateral disarmament is a huge mistake.

Santorum is the best

Santorum is the best candidate we have.  He needs a campaign manager who will help him to get into the ring prepared to beat Mitt at his own game, which means having the willingness to fire back with every fact at his disposal which is accurate to set himself apart from the rest as being the only true conservative in the race who also is free from being ethically challenged.  This is not time to sit back in complacency or lightly dismiss the attacks.  He is going to have to not only prove his impeccable conservative credentials but also show that he is up to every challenge for the job, armed with the truth to fight his battles for him against the others.  I believe he can make it...now it is up to him to be like  David who only needed the slingshot and God on his side to beat Goliath.  America desperately needs him in the Oval Office.  It is my earnest prayer that he may make the necessary adjustments and go on to win the nomination, to the survival and restoration of America.
