Sotomayor Fight Opportunity for Republican ‘Road to Damascus’

The ‘Road to Damascus’ for Republicans may have begun yesterday with their new-found fight over President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sotomayor. In this one fight on principle, Senate Republicans can expose and help defeat President Obama’s radical policy agenda, and win back some respect from conservatives, independents and even some Democrats.
Yesterday Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) joined other Senate Republicans to challenge President Obama’s governing philosophy, as reflected by his nominee, and asked ‘whether or not we still are [any longer] a constitutional republic.’ In other words, this confirmation debate is like no other, and is about whether the Constitution still applies as a check on government power and abuse. The trouble is, some Republican senators are considering voting for Judge Sotomayor or aren’t putting up a fight about Democrats’ demands for speedy confirmation because they aren’t hearing enough from their constituents or the various advocacy groups who should be opposing her and President Obama’s unconstitutional agenda. In May presidential advisor David Axelrod said President Obama picked a nominee whose philosophy of judging was the same as the president’s, which is that judges should ‘adapt,’ i.e., ‘change’ laws and constitutional principles based on their personal experiences. That, of course, is not the role of a judge. The Constitution and rule of law - not one’s ethnicity, gender or ‘life experiences’ - are the true standards of judging and judicial restraint. Americans of all descents - Latino, Iranian, Chinese and others - need to know that government will not take their property or own their medical records, and that judges will follow and enforce the Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights, with impartiality and not with one finger on the scales of justice. With President Obama’s already moving into Nixonian territory (‘it must be legal if the President does it’), this confirmation debate is about more than filling one Supreme Court vacancy. And as a conservative who criticized President Bush’s abuse of presidential power, I’m ‘shocked, shocked’ by the civil libertarians on the left who are silent about the president’s transgressions and who want confirmation of Judge Sotomayor before any meaningful debate. Americans deserve a real confirmation debate that is thoughtful, respectful to the nominee and the American people, and not rammed through before Congress’ August recess. Senate Republicans began their fight for principle yesterday. Americans, no matter which issues matter to them most, must rally to their aid with letters, emails and phone calls of support for their efforts to save the Constitution through this confirmation debate. From now until this confirmation fight is over, the grassroots need to be very energetic and active. Again, RUSH TO THE SOUND OF THE GUNS. Don't wait for orders from Headquarters. New Comment |
