Sotomayor Fight Opportunity for Republican ‘Road to Damascus’
Written by Richard Viguerie on June 25, 2009, 04:07 PM
The ‘Road to Damascus’ for Republicans may have begun yesterday with their new-found fight over President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sotomayor.  In this one fight on principle, Senate Republicans can expose and help defeat President Obama’s radical policy agenda, and win back some respect from conservatives, independents and even some Democrats.

Yesterday Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) joined other Senate Republicans to challenge President Obama’s governing philosophy, as reflected by his nominee, and asked ‘whether or not we still are [any longer] a constitutional republic.’  In other words, this confirmation debate is like no other, and is about whether the Constitution still applies as a check on government power and abuse.

The trouble is, some Republican senators are considering voting for Judge Sotomayor or aren’t putting up a fight about Democrats’ demands for speedy confirmation because they aren’t hearing enough from their constituents or the various advocacy groups who should be opposing her and President Obama’s unconstitutional agenda.

In May presidential advisor David Axelrod said President Obama picked a nominee whose philosophy of judging was the same as the president’s, which is that judges should ‘adapt,’ i.e., ‘change’ laws and constitutional principles based on their personal experiences.  That, of course, is not the role of a judge.  The Constitution and rule of law - not one’s ethnicity, gender or ‘life experiences’ - are the true standards of judging and judicial restraint.

Americans of all descents - Latino, Iranian, Chinese and others - need to know that government will not take their property or own their medical records, and that judges will follow and enforce the Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights, with impartiality and not with one finger on the scales of justice.

With President Obama’s already moving into Nixonian territory (‘it must be legal if the President does it’), this confirmation debate is about more than filling one Supreme Court vacancy.  And as a conservative who criticized President Bush’s abuse of presidential power, I’m ‘shocked, shocked’ by the civil libertarians on the left who are silent about the president’s transgressions and who want confirmation of Judge Sotomayor before any meaningful debate.

Americans deserve a real confirmation debate that is thoughtful, respectful to the nominee and the American people, and not rammed through before Congress’ August recess.  Senate Republicans began their fight for principle yesterday.

Americans, no matter which issues matter to them most, must rally to their aid with letters, emails and phone calls of support for their efforts to save the Constitution through this confirmation debate.

From now until this confirmation fight is over, the grassroots need to be very energetic and active.  Again, RUSH TO THE SOUND OF THE GUNS.  Don't wait for orders from Headquarters.

Sotomayor is not following the proper law or constitution. She thinks she can write the law and do her wishes not qualified in my opinion.DO NOT APPOINT HER

Judges are supposed to abide by the Constitution which does not have a clause where they can use their "personal experiences" in making their decision. Not qualified. Do not appoint her.

A Couple of comments for Richard Viguerie: 1. If you know the names of the senators leaning for confirmation, YOU sir are doing the party a major injury by not naming them. 2. Sotomayor was a done deal before her name was made public. 3. Since you do not have the cajones to name them, let me guess: Hatch, Kyl, Cornyn and get along Graham. All the "yes" Fiefs will later, get some nice "awards" 4. Here is a suggestion. If none of the republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee showed up at the hearings, Sotomayor could not be reported out of committee without at least one supporting signature from the minority party. Cajones anyone? Floyd

I agree with Floyd Larson. Rather than asking us to call our Republican Senators (Which I Can't do because there aren't any from California.) Tell me who the laggards are and I will call them myself and let them know they are selling us down the river, and shouldn't have any support from conservatives. I have cajones and I live in the same state as the nastiest of liberals... Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi so Hatch, Kyl, Cornyn and Graham are lambs by comparison.

Personally, the do nothing Congress should all go home and take the wanna be dictator Obama with them. None, including the Courts are upholding the Constitution that they all swore to uphold. Americans are fast becoming foreigners in their own country as it's now foreign to us.

Your blog post tells a lot about where we are, just by seeing where you are. Your post drips with the completely wrong approach. You blithely talk about Democrats in ways they never talk about us. Very telling. First of all, the "Road to Damascus" reference is disrespectful of religion. This is followed up by your constant reference to Sonia Sotomayor as "Judge" Sotomayor, as though she deserves to be a judge at all. No Democrat ever referred to "Judge" Bork. They always referred to him as Robert Bork, thereby denying him the respect of that title. No wonder no one is opposing her, considering how all of you "leaders" are handling her with respectful kid gloves. How can anyone oppose her, when you and our other "leaders" are giving her so much respect. To hear you talk, I would be tempted to vote to confirm her myself. There is no fire at all in your characterizations of her. You constantly refer to her "philosophy" as though she is educated enough to even have a philosophy, and to Obama's "philosophy" as though he also were intelligent enough to have a philosophy. He and she are just political Leftwing Socialist hacks from the gang dominated streets, who no more have a philosophy than does a street gang member. If we are to "respect" her so much, we might as well cap that by voting for her, and him also for that matter. Taking the high road will get us nowhere. I could go on, but I think I have made my point. It is Washington conventional wisdom by all sides that while Democrats are just plain evil, Republicans are just plain dumb. Robert, You constantly berate Viguerie, yet hound him like a shadow. If you could do so much better, why waste your time on complaining and focus your efforts on your own approach. Oh, that's right, you're crazy.

He spends all his time berating other Republican leaders not to his taste. All I am doing is pointing out that he is no better, and is, in fact, part of the same group that bequeathed us these problems in the first place. How can someone who is part of the problem be a solution to the problem? I offer constructive advice, such as getting our birth rate up, and a hundred other things, things he does not do. I offer actual solutions to our problems, and a concrete plan to solve them, he just whines and moans about them. The best he can come up with is, NO PLAN AT ALL, and just the same old sickly lame stuff about writing to your Congressman. That is such a lame and pitiful excuse for a plan for victory that it is laughable. Look, I care about the survival of this Republic, and I find few indeed who likewise care. Nine out of ten comments are favorable to him, and very few are favorable to me, so it seems he is winning at least on his blog. So what is your complaint? Do you want to censor everything that does not exactly reflect your version of Conservative PC speech?

Any Republican that does not vote NO needs to have their name circulated so they are not supported for re-election.

I believe that Floyd has a point. If the "so-called" conservatives, on the judiciary committee, don't attend, the nomination stays in committee. It seems to me that if any Republican attends the committee hearing, they should no longer be considered conservative.

Let's face it, what it all boils down to is not "Conservatives," or "Liberals," or "Moderates," it's "Integrity," the most lacking commodity in Washington, regardless of party affiliation. Unfortunately, we chose to elect these Republican eunuchs to office, so we have no one to blame but ourselves! Until we start filling the halls of the Senate with good, honest, Christian men like Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) we will continue to bask in the squaller of that dung heap of miscreants!

As a long time Consumer Advocate for Justice, it's important to understand that our U.S. Constitution has been ignored by the democrats, Republicans, liberals, U.S. Justices, U.S. Attorney General, RNC and DNC and no one is asking why. The supreme laws of the land require that a U.S. President be vetted and produce a birth certificate. So, let's start there. Do you really think that a liberal judge aka justice is going to enforce Article II? We can't even get a conservative to enforce Article II and order Obama to produce proof of birth. If the U.S. Constitution were suspended then the violation of Article II would explain why any public officer wouldn't be concerned about following their oath of office or care much about upholding, defending, and protecting the Constitution of the United States. So, if the laws of the land aren't important to a U.S. President and won't produce out of respect for the American people, but finds it okay to bow to a Saudi King, then it would stand to reason that those in public office today hold themselves above the law. Judge Sotomayor in my opinion is another activist judge who will probably end up as a liberal U.S. Justice and continue to slant the scales of justice towards the liberal left. The left attempts to trample on Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, and deny the right to bear arms; or deny Anericans the right to think and if they find your thoughts offensive then they'll probably want to fine and jail you. I'd pay a penny for your thoughts at this point, and it's unfortunate that the radical left doesn't realize that America doesn't need "change." And, appointing U.S. Justices to the bench who can't be fair, objective or follow the Rule of Law because of personal experiences in my opinion is a serious concern for Americans and the country.
