Richard Viguerie: All Republican congressional leaders should resign … or grassroots conservatives will withhold support from the GOP
Written by Richard Viguerie on 2008-11-05T19:33:25+00:00
“Republican congressional leaders have failed their party, they have failed the conservatives who make up their party’s base, and they have failed the American people.  They should resign immediately,” Richard A. Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, said.

“The political party that conservatives have supported with their volunteer work, money, and votes has not supported conservatives.  That has to change.  The congressional leadership must be replaced with principled conservatives.

“If the congressional leaders refuse to resign, grassroots conservatives should cut off their support – their financial support, and their volunteer support,” Viguerie said.  “Conservatives should channel their support to principled conservative candidates and to organizations that will promote a conservative agenda.

“Not one cent, and not one minute of volunteer work, should go to the Republican Party until the congressional leadership is replaced with principled conservatives.  These leaders still don’t understand why the voters have rejected them, and they won’t ‘get it’ until conservatives hit them where it hurts.”

Three years ago, in his book Conservatives Betrayed: How George W. Bush and Other Big Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Cause, Viguerie warned of the consequences for 2006 and 2008 unless Republican leaders were replaced.

Said Viguerie: “In this election, the people did not reject conservatism.  They rejected failed, incompetent Big Government Republican leaders.  It’s time for conservatives to do the same.”

Why should we ask all congressional leaders to resign when we had a true Republican named Ron Paul, running for the Presidency only to be called a quack by his own party and ignored by major media. It looks to me like it's the people of this country with the problem of understanding truth. People are so wrapped up with celebritism that they have a hard time distinguishing the difference between fiction and reallity! But let's not be upset over this election, but instead let's focus our attention on the Democrats who now control it all. If nothing changes, I will become a member of the constitutional party and there I will remain!

I agree that conservatives should cut off their money to the GOP because you are ill served by the party. Put your money where your mouths are and start a new party. Then you can run the candidates of your choice and liking. Do it before 2012....this will give Sarah Palin a place to further herself and the conservative platform. The GOP is surely to distance themselves from Sarah, she is a liability for the GOP, as they seek to re-invent themselves in the coming years. Re-invention is a progressive term, so don't fret if you can not grasp the concept. And that is the problem with the GOP right now, they have been non-progressive, because they are have allowed the conservative wing of their party to rope and tie them. YOU ARE THE REASON THAT YESTERDAY THE COUNTRY REJECTED THE GOP. You are no more welcome in the GOP than you desire to give them your conservative $$$$ to the GOP. So take a page out of Obama's book and make that CHANGE. Do something progressive like starting a new party.

Conservatives have proven that they do not want a Moderate, they want a "stand in the gap" kind of Leader. The RNC had better get that message loud and clear.

Mark, Ron Paul is a Republican, but he's more libertarian than conservative. I think it was his liberal social views that caused many people to write him off. We certainly lost this election because we didn't have a conservative running. Oh, for someone to take up the mantle of Regan...(sigh)
Ron
I am very upset with the RNC and voiced my concern to them yesterday via email. While I understand that Mr. McCain had to present a concession speech - he sounded like but did not need to wave a white flag. He is the spokesman for the base at the moment - he needed to provide a stronger case: that while we lost, and although we will certainly work with the new president, we will not be "run over". We still have our core beliefs. Even though the electorial vote difference was large - the general vote difference was not. We need a stronger candidate.

I understand where you are coming from, but I am not sure all of our leaders in the senate/congress have departed from the reagan conservative ideals. If we fail to support them, and there are no conservative alternates, do we not end up helping the liberal democrats? What we need to do is constantly push our leaders to return to the traditions of the party and also find ourselves some new leaders. We need people like Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, etc.

Dear Richard, I ran against the incumbent republican Governor in the State of Utah this year to get ready for a retry in four years. I went as far as the state convention which is where I wanted to be so people would know my name. Here is my plan to move things back to where they should be. First we need to become independent of the Federal government financially. To do this the people of the state need to increase their income four times in the next 4 years. I have created an Adult Education Club that will accomplish this. Next we need to get rid of parties so I will run for governor with no party affiliation. Then we need to teach other states how to do the same. The public school system in Utah will be phased out over 4 years. The 20,000 plus people now employed in the system will be set up as research specialist. The students will be given the opportunity to apply for work as apprentice in research and other businesses. We need to teach how to do this to other states. Once we have a group of states that no longer are depending on the Federal Government for any financial needs or jobs them we can take down the scale of the Federal Government back to the founding Fathers' instructions. With the increased real education and corresponding income increase we will be able to pay off all of our countries debts and teach other countries how to do the same. In 1975 I made the decision to spend my life in getting a real education and them applying it to making the world tic the way that would enable all of the human family to become prosperous as God intends for His children. The key to this prosperity is in developing real talents. That is the direct opposite of schooling. The technology and talent that will save us from feudalism today are robotics and automation. Our standard of living is directly proportional to the things we do with out thinking about them. This of course is only true when man is free. I have found a new energy source that will take us off of fossil fuels with no need of solar or agriculture scams. The system is tapping the energy that we are submerged in and runs the whole universe. It is done simply by using an noble gas mix and exciting it to a point where it captures the energy in the Aether. For more knowledge of this see http://www.glafreniere.com/matter.htm It is clean and free. What will man do when robots are doing most of the work? Find more work for the robots to do! With this new hope real families will become the want and desirous of all young people and we can truly put the devil out of commission. So in your efforts to make change if you are really true to God and not another scam consider what is written here. Sincerely, Chuck Smith

I'll be honest, I'm torn on this one. I was not a supporter of McCain, though I did vote for him. His loss, however, is likely a good thing for true Republicans since, while he McCain certainly is an American hero, he is not a true Republican. But what, on "the day after" should define a true Republican, I wonder? I think the party has made some serious errors, and I do believe that the GOP needs to rethink their ways in order to establish a party that speaks for the people. I vote Republican because of their traditionally conservative tax policies and fiscal responsibility. For that one reason I agree that the majority of GOP leadership should step down. They have failed us on the bailout, and they have failed to act responsibly with the taxpayers money. The GOP has caved into pressure from the left and much of the leadership is a joke. Here's where we differ, though. I think the GOP needs to get out of the business of trying to regulate morality. The party should firmly believe in low taxes, strong fiscal responsibility, a strong and robust defense of the nation, a strict constructionist belief in the Constitution and the belief that "less government is better government." The GOP should also embrace the fact that we need to have a proper energy policy in this country -- that means a true "Manhattan Project" to invest in and find alternative energy sources (we already have a lot of them -- geothermal, wind, solar -- they all just need more investment and backing). This does NOT mean embracing crazy environmentalism -- but it does mean looking at the whole picture and seeing a future that is mostly free of Mideast oil. The GOP's new leaders need to stand tall in their beliefs and fight for all people. My feeling is that they have lost their way. Toss most of them, and lets start anew.

"The GOP should also embrace the fact that we need to have a proper energy policy in this country -- that means a true "Manhattan Project" to invest in and find alternative energy sources (we already have a lot of them -- geothermal, wind, solar -- they all just need more investment and backing)." Too late, Obama will already have done that - did you not bother to check out his platform before voting against him? Modern neo-conservatism is dying out because it serves a few at the cost of many, plain and simple. Nation-building is not "conservative." Growing government like Bush 43, Bush 41, and yes, your beloved Ronald Reagan did, is not "conservative." Spying on Americans without any oversight is not "conservative." I checked out this site because I heard Viguerie thinks Palin is the future of true conservatism and the GOP. HA HA HA HA! Yes, please run her for President in 2012! If you think a vacuous person who attracts the least-educated and most-bitter faction of America is the future of your party, you deserved W! America is evolving beyond your base tactics and immoral greed. BYE BYE!

Why should they resign? They know the only reason we lost was because of those damned conservatives- if only we had listened to the rinos everything would be just fine. It was all Gov Palins fault and if we are nice to the democrats the media will love us- they just don't or wont get it. If they haven't figured it out yet they never will - they are in deep denial and truly believe all we need to do is swing to the left and become democrats. They are convinced despite the evidence they did nothing wrong this or last time. I have no hope they will figure it out now.

The Republican movement is dead. Seems to be the mantra of the median since the Presidential election. Even while the liberalism celebrates in their feeding frenzy of their new leader, they just can’t resist sticking in the knife in conservatives everywhere. Just what happened? Where are the Republicans? Republicans are exactly where they have been for almost a decade, hiding under the table, one foot in the Democratic party, apologizing for getting in the way of the slide to the left. Republicans are no longer the party of smaller government, lower taxes, and the real “power to the people.” We have become the party of compromise, the ones who lower our standards to “work together.” Democrats do not compromise, they brow beat Republicans into submitting to their ways. We have become the party of giving instead of taking, the status quo instead of standing firm. We are the party without a spine! I sit in utter disbelief, watching my country practically implode on itself, voting for a candidate for change. No substance, just “change”. Change for the sake of change? It’s the same as going to a restaurant and ordering whatever someone else picks. We put our blind faith in a person who we do not know, but assume he or she will do the right thing for us? I say NO, NEVER! I look at my party, once the proud party of Ronald Reagan, and see it in shambles. I see Senators and Representatives leaving in shame, or retiring to make a buck. At such a crucial time in our country, with an ongoing war overseas, and another war with the left wing, I see Republicans such as Pete Dominici retire, and watch another conservative seat fall into the left’s hands. I see Trent Lott, great statesman he was, leave his post, and the left almost get his seat. Even in my home, I see Richard Baker, a staunch conservative, and strong voice in the House, retire to run a hedge fund? When did money become more powerful than the commitment these people made to uphold their conservative values in Washington? To these Republicans, I say SHAME ON YOU! You have abandoned your party for comfort or money, and left us during our greatest time of need! You decided in the midst of the battle of left and right to lay down your arms and give up the fight! SHAME ON YOU! Now, with the party in disarray, where do we turn? Conservatives feel abandoned by our “pseudo” leadership, or lack of. We are not a centrist party, we believe what we believe! Strong defense, smaller government, lower taxes, no legislating from the bench! The heartland of America, the breadbasket of the world, has not wavered, only our elected representatives have! We are given the choice of a leftist, or a right leaning centrist candidate. We only are given the choice not to vote for someone, but only to vote against the other. Where are our leaders? Where are the minutemen of old? Conservatives should be willing and able to stand by our principles no matter what. We don’t compromise, we don’t surrender, we don’t quit until we win. The House of Representatives in 1994, the year of the Republican Revolution, knew what it meant to stand up and be counted. They stood their ground, despite a lack of support from their counterparts in the Senate, as well as the White House. Unfortunately, they did not achieve their goals and promises, no thanks again to the Senate, and the Revolution died as quick as it started. Now, it’s time for conservatism to rise from the ashes. We are down, but not out. There are leaders who still champion conservative values, but they are not a household name. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin seems to be the only one out “showing the colors” of conservativism. There are other bright spots, such as Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, and now “liberal Republican’s” favorite whipping child, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. If this does not show mainstream conservatives that our “Republican” members are as dysfunctional as they come, I don’t know what will. Thomas Jefferson said “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Conservatives need to stand by this, not in terms of loss of life, but with their political lives. It may not be the popular thing to do, to stand for what we believe is right, and may be political suicide in some instances, but we must stand up to the left, no matter the cost. This congress should be the most obstructionist in history. We don’t have much power, but we have the gift of the filibuster, and should use it every turn of the hand. We must stop the liberal advance at any cost. There can be no compromise, no defeatism, no nothing. This is our line in the sand. If conservatism is indeed dead, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. American, do not lose hope, all is not lost, the radical right will rise again!

I feel like a voice crying in the wilderness. When will it dawn on conservatives (who make up about 60% of the population) and Christians (who supposedly make up 80% of the population) that, if they are true to their core beliefs, neither have anything in common with either Democrats or Republicans? This latest election should have made that abundantly clear. Don't believe it? Hands up everybody who voted for someone they actually believed was a good choice, someone they really wanted to follow for the next four years. Now, look around and count the hands. Any more questions? I came to this website a year or two back, thinking I had finally found the missing conservatives, but it's just another bunch of Republicans (good Republicans for the most part, but still not conservatives). Mr. Viguerie, you seem to be a conservative at heart, but are still bashing your head against a brick wall expecting to find a way to get the Republicans to change into Conservatives. That will never happen, even Ronald Reagan couldn't do that. Just look at what happened to the Republican Party after his eight years of conservatism. Rather than trying to make Republicans into conservatives, what we need to do is to build a Conservative Party that will provide a home for all conservatives. Set out in detail our core values and follow them so that people who vote for a Conservative candidate know what they will get and that if that candidate, once elected, does not live up to the standards, he should be impeached by his own party. Mr. Viguerie, I am just an unknown backwoods country boy, but you have an organization and people will listen to you. Won't you please give some thought to leading us in getting a party we can all vote for? I'm getting along in years and I would like to have the opportunity to vote for someone who stands for what I believe in instead of taking the lesser of two evils. I've done that for over fifty years now (with the exception of the two times I was privileged to vote for Pres. Reagan) and the first time I voted for our current president. I know a lot of people are trashing George W., but every day I thank God he was there when we needed him.

I saw John Boehner last night on television, and he said that Republicans had learned their lessons. He says that "we" should reach out to African-Americans and Latino's, etc. . . . Poor John still doesn't get it. Developing race-based programs in an attempt to woo African Americans and Latinos into the party further deepens the hole that the Republicans have dug for themselves and makes Republicans look more and more like big-government, pandering Democrats (if such were possible). Smaller, less expensive, and less intrusive government with balanced budgets and pay-downs on the debt, benefit us all -- regardless of race. I call upon John Boehner to resign.

With all due respect, you're wrong. John McCain and Sarah Palin ran on a ticket that was unabashedly conservative: no stem cell research, pro Bush tax cuts, pro Iraq War, pro neoconservative interventionism, pro religious fundamentalism, pro torture, pro warantless wiretaps, and so forth. The nation rejected John McCain and Sarah Palin because they are sick of dealing with the mess left behind by conservatives. Reasonable Americans have had enough of liberty thieving social conservatism. These attitudes aren't going away as the younger generation, decidedly anticonservative, comes of age. Americans want to turn away from conservative policy and bring this country into the 21st century with the rest of the world. Republicans must accept this if they ever expect to win future election.

John McCain has been "unabashedly conservative"?? He favored lax border security and a fast-track to citizenship for ILLEGAL aliens. I think he supported Medicare Part D (hopelessly expensive and socialistic). He was anything but a deficit hawk, and he voted for a pork-laden bailout bill after saying he wouldn't do so. John McCain gave that shameless Republicrat in the White House a thumb's up at virtually every turn.
