The Scalia Factor With Undecided Voters

Last night in Atlanta, I hosted a panel of undecided voters. Of those who had broken to Cruz, three of them did so because of Scalia’s passing and the other three had locked their vote in for Cruz because of Scalia’s passing. Of the undecideds who were not committed, but leaning to Cruz, almost all of them said the Scalia death was leaning them toward Cruz.

Scalia understood that American constitutional law is based in the morality that civil society should be structured such that we should do no harm to others. The “we” includes government. The Constitution is structured to limit government’s harm to individuals and our God-given rights. Scalia understood the need for judicial fidelity to that structure.

What cannot happen is a fractured evangelical base stands around two or three candidates and throws stones at itself. If that happens, we will see another 20 years of liberal Supreme Court justices, and another 20 or 30 million unborn babies killed. This election is now about ending abortion and preserving life, just like 1860 was about ending slavery. The sooner Christians understand that, the better.
