CONSERVATISM 101

NOTE that we do not necessarily agree with all the points made in these articles and lists, but present them as part of an overall guide. (Comments? Suggestions for additions to this page? The Conservative Grassroots Rebellion

To understand why we're rebelling, start off by reading Richard Viguerie’s 2006 Washington Post article – “Bush’s Base Betrayal" – in which he went after the Big Government Republicans. Click HERE. [If you don’t know who Richard Viguerie is, click HERE.]

And read Viguerie’s comments in a followup discussion by clicking HERE

You might also want to check out a group of articles published in The Washington Monthly in 2006. The articles, including one by Viguerie, focus on conservative opposition to the Big Government Republicans. Click HERE.

The Conservative Movement

William Rusher, who was the longtime publisher of National Review, wrote a short history of the conservative movement, which you can read HERE.

Lee Edwards, a Heritage Foundation distinguished fellow and a former editor of Richard Viguerie’s Conservative Digest magazine, wrote about “The Origin of the Modern American Conservative Movement” HERE

Viguerie discussed campaign finance laws, the history of the conservative movement, and other things with veteran political reporter Jules Witcover, HERE

Read the chapter on "The Birth of the Conservative Movement" from America’s Right Turn by Richard A. Viguerie and David Franke, HERE.

Richard Viguerie and Steven J. Allen wrote a history of the conservative movement for the 10th anniversary issue of Conservative Digest, May 1985.  This is a version of that piece that appeared in their newspaper column.  It's a little dated, of course, and reflects the optimism of the time, but is nonetheless worth a look, HERE.

Morton Blackwell, head of the Leadership Institute, has a number of speeches and writings on the history and structure of the conservative movement and on how to be a conservative activist.  Find that material HERE.

To get an idea of what conservatives are up against, read Thomas Sowell's review of Liberal Fascism, Jonah Goldberg's expose of the "progressive" [sic] movement, HERE.  Read Ron Radosh's review HERE, Rich Lowry's review HERE, and Daniel Pipes's review HERE.
