Kavanaugh Committee Vote Coming In One Week: Call Your Senators Today!

The Senate Judiciary Committee's vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has been delayed until next week and is now scheduled to take place on September 20 at 1:45 p.m.

According to multiple media reports, yesterday the committee voted 11-10 to set the vote on Kavanaugh's nomination for next Thursday.

Kavanaugh nominationThe move by Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, to hold over the nomination tracks with committee practice, and continues the Republican push forward to have Kavanaugh confirmed by the full Senate the last week of September.

But what is usually a quick procedural process turned into another opportunity for the panel's Democrats to voice their displeasure -- and disdain -- for a process that has drawn criticism as unfair for weeks.

Democrats pushed back on holding a committee vote on Kavanaugh's nomination, arguing that they don't have access to documents about Kavanaugh's record and haven't heard from witnesses.

"I don't understand the rush to judgment," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the committee. "If successfully nominated he could become the deciding vote on major issues Americans care deeply about."

Republicans on the committee blocked several of Democratic senators' motions made during the meeting.

Democrats have also begun to float rumors of new secret charges against Judge Kavanaugh dating back to his high school years, but so far, these scurrilous rumors remain just that – scurrilous rumors.

With Maine’s Independent Senator Angus King now voicing his opposition to Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation the floor vote could shape up to be a strict party line vote, although many Democrats have yet to publicly oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination.

If no Democrat votes to confirm Judge Kavanaugh, then Republicans can only lose one vote and still confirm him to the Supreme Court.

Here is how the vote stands according to our research.

Four Republican Senators have yet to clearly commit to vote for Judge Kavanaugh: Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska (202-224-6665) and Susan Collins of Maine (202-224-2523) are known to be leaning YES but could use a RESPECTFUL call of encouragement to do so.

Likewise, while Republican Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona (202-224-4521) and Ben Sasse of Nebraska (202-224-4224) spoke favorably of Judge Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing, however, neither has made an unequivocal commitment to vote to confirm him.

A number of Democrats have already announced their opposition to Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation and are thus not worth your time to call. They include Senators Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Chuck Schumer of New York, Kamala Harris of California, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Patty Murray of Washington, Dianne Feinstein of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Kristen Gillibrand of New York and Independent Democrat Angus King of Maine.

We urge CHQ readers and friends to start with the four Republicans who need shoring up. RESPECTFULLY urge them to vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh. After those four phone calls we urge you to call the Democrats who have yet to voice a position on Kavanaugh’s confirmation, with top targets being Senators Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and, unlikely as it sounds, Claire McCaskill of Missouri.

Dem obstruction of Kavanaugh confirmation

How do we [GOP] keep allowing this? We fight fair and take the high road, turn one cheek and then the other and the left pulls every dirty trick in the book. Feinstein says she doesn't understand the rush, "we don't have all the documents" (including the one accusing Kavanaugh of sexual miscinduct IN HIGH SCHOOL) that she was saving for a Hail Mary. Does anyone really buy this? If not...why are we allowing it? We have a rare power play with the president, congress and the senate all GOP. Now we stand a chance to bring back constitutional conservatism to the SCOTUS. Where is the backlash against the senators who gave gallery passes to obvious disruptors? Why allow this farcical 11th hour play after the obvious planned disruption and stated refusal to consider a great candidate - before he was even named! We don't have to stoop to their idiocy and tantrums but we damn well better play at full force and punish the bad actors in real time. Send a message that this behavior has serious consequences.
