Principled Conservatives Oppose The GOP Leadership’s Phony Vote On Amnesty

Yesterday we told you about Obama’s plan to immediately hire 1,000 new bureaucrats to process the paperwork necessary to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens and we pointed out that there is only one way to stop it, and that is to defund it NOW.

However, rather than actually put defunding amnesty to a vote the House Republican leadership inexplicably chose to hold a worthless symbolic vote that prompted several principled conservatives, including Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX-1) and Indiana Rep. Marlin Stutzman (IN-3), to actually vote against the bill.

Stutzman issued a statement saying, “While I believe Congressman Yoho’s bill is well intentioned, I am afraid it is nothing more than a symbolic gesture at best and does little to prevent the president’s dangerous action from being put into place. I strongly believe Congress should continue to listen to our constituents and find meaningful ways to stop it. For these reasons I do not support this bill.”

And Stutzman was not alone in his analysis of the Yoho – Price proposal as it’s come to be called.

NumbersUSA, one of the leading grassroots organizations fighting Obama’s unconstitutional attempt to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, called the bill “meaningless.”

The organization issued a strongly worded statement of opposition to the Yoho bill saying:

The three million Americans NumbersUSA represents expect their elected Members of Congress to take effective action to stop President Obama's unconstitutional amnesty.  They see the vote on the Yoho bill for exactly what it is:  a meaningless gesture designed to distract the public and give cover to House Republicans who have no intention of fighting to protect their own constitutional powers or for Americans' wages and job opportunities.

House Republicans have promised repeatedly to do everything in their power to stop Obama's illegal amnesty.  Speaker Boehner promised to fight "tooth and nail" to reverse this lawless action.  The Yoho bill does nothing to keep these promises.  Even if the Yoho bill had a path to enactment, and even it the bill weren't riddled with loopholes, Americans understand that amending the law to reign in a lawless President is a pointless endeavor.

Instead, Americans expect Congress to use its constitutional power of the purse effectively to prevent President Obama from carrying out his illegal amnesty. Thus, NumbersUSA will be announcing early next week that we will be scoring as a vote for amnesty any appropriations package that fails to include a rider to defund the amnesty.

In his statement Congressman Stutzman said exactly what we think the House leadership should have been saying all along, if only they had the same commitment to conservative principle that Stutzman and Gohmert have. “President Obama’s executive action on immigration represents an open disdain for the Constitutional system our Founders’ created, and from the time it was announced, I promised my constituents in Indiana that I would fight it. The president has ignored the voices of the American people, set an irresponsible precedent for future administrations, and shown a blatant disregard for our checks and balances system of government.”

We urge you to call or write your Representative and Senators (the Capitol switchboard is 1-866-220-0044) to tell them they must vote to defund Obama’s plan to hire 1,000 new amnesty bureaucrats NOW, not in March after they have already sent millions of Social Security cards to illegal aliens. SIGN and SHARE OUR PETITION TO STOP OBAMA'S EXECUTIVE AMNESTY!
