Mitch McConnell Sets Up Democrat Impeachment Managers For Days Of Public Humiliation

Mitch McConnell
We regularly have our differences with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, but his recent comments on the House Democrats’ rush to impeach President Trump were right on point.

"It is not the Senate's job to leap into the breach and search desperately for ways to 'get to to guilty,'" McConnell said. "The Senate is meant to act as judge and jury — to hear a trial. Not to re-run the entire fact-finding investigation, because angry partisans rushed sloppily through it."

Senator McConnell may have been a bit too charitable in describing the House Democrats’ process as rushed and sloppy. Our take is that Democrats Schiff, Nadler and Pelosi were indeed in a rush to impeach President Trump, but they weren’t necessarily sloppy – they carefully tailored the testimony admitted into evidence to paint the worst possible picture of President Trump, while excluding exculpatory testimony and documents from their report as best they could.

This strategy should look familiar, because it’s exactly what the partisan Democrats at the FBI and Obama Department of Justice did in their applications for surveillance of the Trump campaign to the FISA court, whose Chief Judge, in light of the recent Department of Justice Inspector General’s report, is now demanding the FBI come clean about its misrepresentations to the Court.

This manipulation of the record and evidence is what Prof. Jonathan Turley warned against when he testified before Nadler’s House Judiciary Committee, “In the current case, the record is facially insufficient. The problem is not simply that the record does not contain direct evidence of the President stating a quid pro quo, as Chairman Schiff has suggested. The problem is that the House has not bothered to subpoena the key witnesses who would have such direct knowledge. This alone sets a dangerous precedent. A House in the future could avoid countervailing evidence by simply relying on tailored records with testimony from people who offer damning presumptions or speculation.”

Why is even the tailored record Democrats have produced “facially insufficient” as Prof. Turley termed it?

Simple – Democrats have failed to produce any evidence of wrongdoing by the President:

President Trump and President Zelensky have made clear that there was no pressure.

There is no evidence that President Trump pressured Ukraine to initiate investigations to impact the 2020 election.

There is no evidence that the President withheld aid or a meeting to pressure Ukraine to investigate Burisma, the Bidens, or the 2016 election.

The President has been extremely transparent, even releasing the transcript of the call upon which the Democrats have based their impeachment narrative.

So, where does that leave Democrats?

The Democrats’ entire impeachment sham relies on speculation and second, third, and fourth-hand accounts that fail to demonstrate any wrongdoing by President Trump.

House Democrats based their calls for impeachment on assumptions, presumptions, and speculation from witnesses who had no interaction with the President.

None of the witnesses had any firsthand knowledge or evidence of wrongdoing by the President.

Most of their witnesses never spoke with President Trump or weren’t even involved in the events at hand.

Only two people actually asked the President about this – Gordon Sondland and Sen. Ron Johnson, and the President told both of them he was not seeking any quid pro quo.

Bottom line: In order to tailor the record to justify their impeachment narrative, Democrats have constructed an impeachment narrative based on lying, leaking, and misleading the American people to advance their political agenda.

In responding to a request to from New York Senator Charles Schumer, the Senate’s Democrat Leader, to subpoena new witnesses and documents the House Democrats failed to obtain, McConnell described the House of Representatives' case against Trump as "deficient," adding that the Senate would not volunteer its time for a "fishing expedition."

Given the weakness of the record tailored by House Democrats in their “investigation,” Mitch McConnell telling Democrats they are stuck with the record as it stands as the basis for the presentation of their case to the Senate sets up days of well-deserved public humiliation for the House Democrats selected as impeachment managers.

The toll-free Capitol Switchboard number (1-866-220-0044), we urge CHQ readers and friends to call their Senators to demand they vote NO on the unfair and unfounded impeachment of President Trump.

Mitch McConnell & Impeachment in the Senate

I agree that Mr. McConnell is a bit too slippery. Definitely NOT a conservative! But every once-in-awhile, he can muster a spine. And when he does, he can surprise and even impress! I am not sure it can be called integrity. But right now, I'll take him doing the right thing for whatever reason he has.Trump is completely innocent of the charges (which are not even discernable crimes to begin with). I think everyone on both sides of this argument are fully aware of this fact. That is why 'Facts' and 'Evidence' are not necessary in this case. Liberals are simply fishing for a way to beat Trump, since they cannot do it at the ballot box.And now the Senate has the extremely important opportunity to show America the depths of hypocracy, corruption, collusion, and criminal intent which the democrats have embraced in this, their unconstitutional push to remove a duly elected, sitting president.
