The measure, which denounces the “antisemitic terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado” should have been a no brainer for Democrats, who have traditionally counted the Jewish Community as core members of their urban-centered coalition.
Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Colo., introduced the resolution. The congressman said before a vote on the measure Monday he was focused on making sure there’s a conversation about preventing attacks similar to the one in Boulder from happening again.
In his floor speech, Evans stated: “As a former police officer and Army veteran of the global war on terror, I know how Colorado’s radical leftists leaders and laws prioritize illegal immigrants over public safety — allowing antisemitic terrorists like Mohammed Sabry Soliman to strike.”
“Without Colorado’s sanctuary laws, this attack might have been prevented. And so I urge my colleagues to stand in defense of American values and join me in passing this [resolution], which is focused on keeping Americans and Colorado safe and having the discussion around the solutions to have the policies to accomplish that,” Rep. Evans said.
Soliman previously failed a background check for a gun purchase and had multiple encounters with law enforcement before the attack, according to the congressman.
“House Democrats just sided with terrorists over cops and couldn’t even bring themselves to condemn antisemitism. They’re officially the antisemite and anti-cop caucus,” Mike Marinella, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Republican Jewish Coalition posted a list on X of all the Democrats who voted against the resolution, calling their opposition “shameful.”
The resolution notes Mohamed Sabry Soliman, who is now facing hate crime and many other charges in connection to the June 1 firebombing in Boulder, allegedly shouted “Free Palestine” and spoke about wanting to kill all the Zionists.
In addition, it mentions Soliman is an Egyptian national who overstayed his visa and his case “demonstrates the dangers of not removing from the country aliens who fail to comply with the terms of their visas.” The resolution also expresses gratitude to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — a federal agency now in the crosshairs of Democrats for its role in carrying out President Trump’s deportation orders.
In the lead up to the vote House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) took Democrats to task saying “Only radical Democrats would call it a joke to denounce antisemitic terrorism and express gratitude to law enforcement for detaining the terrorist here illegally who perpetrated the Boulder attack… Appreciate [Evans] — a veteran and former law enforcement officer – for leading on this important resolution.”
The measure labels "Free Palestine" an "antisemitic slogan that calls for the destruction of the state of Israel and the Jewish people."
"Condemning antisemitism and condemning sanctuary state policies shouldn't be hard, but Democrats twisting themselves into a pretzel over this shows how bad their party has gotten," a spokesperson for Evans told Axios.
"This is a solutions-oriented resolution, and it will be disappointing if folks vote against it because they support pro-Hamas slogans and violent illegal immigrants."
