A recent Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey found that 48% of Likely U.S. Voters have a favorable impression of the Republican Party, while 45% view the Democratic Party favorably. Overall, the favorability for Democrats has dropped two points since July. Favorability for Democrats among unaffiliated voters has declined seven points since July.

The overall gap between the two parties remains narrow, but 35% of voters now have a Very Unfavorable opinion of Democrats, up four points since July, while 36% have a Very Unfavorable impression of Republicans, down two points since July.

Polarized views of America’s two major parties are prevalent for voters with strong political opinions. Among those with a Very Favorable view of Democrats, 63% have a Very Unfavorable opinion of Republicans, while among those with a Very Favorable impression of Republicans, 73% have a Very Unfavorable view of Democrats.

Eighty-four percent (84%) of Republican voters have a favorable impression of their own party, compared to 80% of Democrats who view their own party favorably. Among voters not affiliated with either major party, 38% now have a favorable opinion of Republicans and 32% view Democrats favorably. Favorability for Democrats among unaffiliated voters has declined seven points since July.

There is a significant “gender gap” in party favorability. By a seven-point margin, more women voters (49%) than men (42%) view the Democrats favorably, while more men (51%) than women voters (45%) have a favorable impression of Republicans.

And Rasmussen is not the only pollster to find these results, Quinnipiac found their numbers to be even lower.

Democrats are viewed at least somewhat favorably by 41% of whites, 69% of black voters, 49% of Hispanics and 37% of other minorities. Fifty percent (50%) of whites, 33% of black voters, 54% of Hispanics and 50% of other minorities view Republicans at least somewhat favorably.

Voters under 30 have a more favorable view of Democrats than do older voters. Favorability for the GOP is highest among voters in their 40s.

Breaking down the electorate by income categories, voters earning more than $100,000 are most likely to have a Very Unfavorable opinion of the Democratic Party. Favorability for Republicans is highest among those with annual incomes above $200,000.

It should surprise no one to learn that Rasmussen found that government employees (57%) are significantly more likely than private sector workers (42%) or retirees (44%) to have a favorable impression of Democrats.

The survey of 1,184 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on October 7-9, 2025 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
