In Elections Around the World, Young Men Have Become the New ‘Power Demographic’

Our friends at the International Council for Men and Boys have just announced their latest research on the global shift in political demographics showing that young men are emerging as the new “power demographic,” increasingly rejecting liberal and labor parties and moving toward conservative and populist alternatives. This realignment spans continents and is reshaping political landscapes around the world.

In North America, a majority of young men have pulled away from progressive parties. In the United States, Democratic support among men aged 18–24 collapsed from 22 points in 2020 to just 3 points in 2024, with 56% of young men voting Republican. (1) In Canada, young men under 30 have become the most Conservative-leaning age group, with support rising steadily since 2021 (2).

In Europe, young men are driving political support for right-leaning parties in Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Sweden. Across the continent, young males are far more likely than females to support anti-immigration and anti-establishment movements. (3)(4)

In Asia, sharp gender divides have emerged. In South Korea’s 2022 election, 58.7% of men in their 20s voted for the conservative-leaning People Power Party, while young women backed liberal parties. (5) Similar trends are surfacing in China, where young men increasingly support nationalist and traditionalist policies (6)(7).

In Latin America, conservative candidates have gained ground among young men in countries such as Argentina (8) and Brazil (9), fueled by dissatisfaction with economic stagnation and progressive cultural dominance.

In Africa (10) and Australia (11)(12), young men are gravitating toward conservative platforms, reflecting frustrations over cultural shifts, economic pressures, and exclusion from prevailing gender narratives. (13)

Driving this global shift are broad-based concerns over legal inequalities, educational disadvantages, health disparities, and unfavorable media portrayals of men. (14) The recent 30-country Ipsos survey found that 57% of Gen Z men – born 1997-2012 – now agree with the statement, “We have gone so far in promoting women’s equality that we are discriminating against men.” (15)

The International Council for Men and Boys calls upon global leaders of all political parties to acknowledge these generational shifts, and work toward inclusive policies that address the full range of gender-based challenges.

The International Council for Men and Boys is a non-governmental organization that works to celebrate the contributions of men to society and to end the 12 disparities that affect men and boys around the world. Achieving #GenderEqualityForMen also will benefit women.
