In Memoriam: Elaine Viguerie

Elaine Adele O’Leary Viguerie went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

She was born November 14, 1941, in Dallas, Texas. Six weeks later her parents moved to Houston, Texas, where she lived until her marriage in February 1962 to Richard Art Viguerie.

She and Richard lived in New York City for nine months and then relocated to Washinton, D.C. for a few years and lived in Maryland before moving to Northern Virginia.

Richard Viguerie founded the world’s first ideological/political direct marketing company in 1965, and their homes in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and McLean, Virginia were the locations for thousands of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, receptions, and meetings for national, state, and local conservatives. All were overseen and hosted by Elaine.

If there was anything that could be identified as Hillary Clinton’s “vast right-wing conspiracy,” it was the Viguerie’s homes and get togethers that Elaine presided over.

In 1985, Elaine and Richard moved to Washington, Virginia and Elaine became active in town politics, serving as the elected Treasurer of Washington, Virginia from 1997 to 2000.

Early in their marriage, Elaine developed a strong interest in health, nutrition, and wellness, and through decades of intense study had a greater understanding of nutrition than many doctors who seldom study the subject.

She also found time to become fluent in Spanish and French, and to be a businesswoman as the owner of a hotel copy center business in Houston, Texas.

Elaine’s father Joseph O’Leary was a highly accomplished artist and taught Elaine, who became an accomplished painter in her own right.

Elaine was frequently described as beautiful, loving, kind, thoughtful, intelligent, caring, a truly deep soul, and if kindness had a picture in the dictionary, it would have been hers.

In 2006 Elaine suffered a major stroke that left her paralyzed on the left side, which required her to move into an assisted living facility.

She passed peacefully with family by her side.

Elaine was predeceased by her parents, Joseph O’Leary and Adele Swonke O’Leary. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Richard, their three children, Renée Elaine Coffman, Michelle Marie Kelley, and Richard Ryan Viguerie, and six grandchildren, Virginia Coffman Sperrazza, Kathleen Coffman, Matthew Coffman, John “Jeb” Coffman, Megan Kelley, and Shannon Kelley, along with her two brothers, Joseph O’Leary, Jr. and Timothy O’Leary, other cherished family members, and many wonderful, valued caregivers at Heritage Village Assisted Living and BrightStar Care.
