A recent Rasmussen Reports survey found most voters agree with President Donald Trump that illegal immigrants shouldn’t be included in census counts and they support the President’s order for a new census. A majority (52%) of those who voted for Kamala Harris in last year’s presidential election think the census should count illegal aliens, while 70% of Trump voters say illegal aliens shouldn’t be counted.
A recent Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of Trump’s decision to order a new census, including 36% who Strongly Approve. Thirty-four percent (34%) disapprove of Trump ordering a new census, including 24% who Strongly Disapprove.
Census Bureau researchers found that the 2020 census overcounted populations in eight states while undercounting populations in six others. In announcing his decision to order a new census, Trump said that illegal immigrants will not be counted. Fifty-two percent (52%) of voters say illegal immigrants shouldn’t be counted in the census, while 36% believe they should be counted, and 11% are not sure.
Among voters who don’t think illegal immigrants should be counted in the census, 74% approve of Trump’s decision to order a new census.
Eighty-three percent (83%) of Republicans, 43% of Democrats and 49% of voters not affiliated with either major party at least somewhat approve of Trump ordering a new census.
Nearly half (49%) of Democrats believe the census should count illegal immigrants, but solid majorities of both Republicans (65%) and unaffiliated voters (57%) say illegal immigrants shouldn’t be counted.
Significantly more men (65%) than women voters (51%) approve of Trump’s decision to order a new census, but majorities of both sexes don’t think the census should count illegal immigrants.
Trump’s decision to order a new census is at least somewhat approved by 57% of whites, 55% of black voters, 72% of Hispanics and 47% of other minorities. Black voters are more likely to think the census should count illegal immigrants.
Voters under 40 are more likely to approve of Trump ordering a new census. Those ages 50 to 64 are most likely to say illegal immigrants shouldn’t be counted by the census.
While 56% of government employees believe the census should count illegal immigrants, only 35% of private sector workers and 32% retirees share that belief.
