Rep. Jason Smith is the Chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. According to Chairman Smith, his committee has been investigating what he referred to as the Singham CCP (Chinese Communist Party) network.
At a recent hearing of his committee Chairman Smith charged that several U.S.-based tax-exempt organizations to which wealthy former tech executive Neville Roy Singham and his wife, a co-founder of Code Pink, have documented ties and are acting on behalf of hostile foreign governments, including the Chinese Communist Party, and are promoting its propaganda.
“Many of these tax-exempt groups also have documented ties to hostile foreign governments, like the Chinese Communist Party, the People’s Forum, an American tax exempt group who I demanded documents from in September, it hosts events and courses pushing Communist Party propaganda incites violent protests and riots, including disruptive occupations of college campuses and publicly, publicly supported Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack against Israel,” Smith said in a statement reported by LifeZette.
Smith said the People’s Forum, which he identified as an American tax-exempt group, has echoed Communist Party messaging. “And it’s no wonder that the people’s forum echoes Communist Party propaganda,” he said, pointing to what he described as a significant donor connected to the organization.
“One of their largest donors is a wealthy former US tech executive living in Shanghai who is cozy, extremely cozy, with the Chinese Communist Party, Neville Roy Singham and his wife, a co-founder of Code Pink, donated over $20 million to the people’s forum through shell companies and donor advised funds to hide the original source of the money,” Smith said.
“The Committee has worked tirelessly to unravel the Singham-CCP network, Chairman Smith said in his opening statement at the hearing.
“Just last night, I sent letters to Tricontinental and BreakThrough News, two organizations that are part of his regime of CCP-linked non-profits operating here in the U.S.
“Each one of these groups has the same thing in common. Foreign actors fueling disruption and illegal activity in America, using a dark web of tax-exempt groups… And all this disruption, chaos, and hate is subsidized by American taxpayers,” Chairman Smith observed.
In the pair of letters, Smith accused Singham of funding and operating a network of American nonprofits which “serve as his conduits to spread pro-CCP narratives.” Smith calls out BreakThrough News, the People’s Forum, Tricontinental, and the International Peoples’ Assembly as members of his network.
“Furthermore, the Committee has discovered that Mr. Singham’s business ties are far more entrenched in CCP-aligned networks than public reports have suggested,” Smith wrote.
Smith’s letters, first obtained by Fox News Digital, to BreakThrough and Tricontinental, demanding that the profit organizations “turn over certain documents to the United States.”
“The Committee is disturbed by the connections between BreakThrough News and Chinese Communist Party (“CCP”) linked organizations,” Smith wrote in a letter addressed to Karla Reyes, Chair and Director of BreakThrough Bt Media Inc. “This action taken by the Committee is part of a concerted effort to review such allegations and is informed by congressional hearings and past investigatory letters that continue to unveil concerning connections between tax-exempt groups and foreign nations,” reported WGME.com.
Further in the letter, Smith pointed to several examples of BreakThrough promoting “pro-CCP” rhetoric such as pushing pro-Hamas rhetoric in the wake of the October 7, 2023 attacks.
BreakThrough News is also part of the International People’s Media Network (“the Network”), a coalition of news organizations publishing anti-American, pro-CCP content.19 Members of the Network share staff and work in conjunction with the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research (“Tricontinental”), an avowedly Marxist tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization,” Smith wrote.
WGME.com reported Smith also expressed concern over the non-profit sending representatives to a conference held by a public institution funded by the CCP in China.
“Therefore, given the Committee’s concerns, and in furtherance of the Committee’s oversight, I seek to understand why, and if, BreakThrough News deserves their tax-exempt status,” Smith wrote.
In a letter addressed to Vijay Prashad, the executive director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Smith raised similar concerns if the nonprofit was deserving to keep its tax exempt status because of its ties to Singham. In 2019, the nonprofit received $700,000 from the United Community Fund, a tax-exempt foundation connected to Singham.
“Reports indicate that Tricontinental, and individuals connected to it, have been responsible for sowing chaos and spreading Chinese propaganda, possibly in coordination with a foreign government,” Smith wrote.
“In addition to your work at Tricontinental, you serve as a senior fellow at the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at the Renmin University of China, a think tank with links to China’s Ministry of Education and Beijing’s municipal government,” Smith continued.
President of the Government Accountability Institute, Peter Schweizer told WGME.com’s National News Desk Singham is an American citizen who moved to China shortly after selling company and is sympathetic to the Chinese Communist Party.
"He counts Chinese Communist Party leaders as his friends and he donates large sums of money, by my estimation more than $100 million to radical groups, including a group in New York called ‘The People's Forum' which works with Antifa-like organizations," Schweizer said.
Schweizer added that it is important, since some of the groups connected to the violent protests happening in cities like Minneapolis, New York and Los Angeles have direct links to “The People's Forum”.
"Which is being funded from China by Neville Roy Singham. So, this should have government investigation," said Schweizer.
We commend Chairman Jason Smith for his investigation of the Singham Network and urge him to make referrals to the FBI and the Justice Department for further investigation and action.
