Panicked Dems Ponder How They Lost the Male Vote

Seldom in American history have so many voters abandoned a political party in such a short period of time. Since 2020, 4.5 million men switched their vote from the Democratic column, handing historic gains to Republican candidates across the nation.

These shifts away from candidate Kamala Harris were evident among all major racial and ethnic groups, according to the recent Catalist report (1):

  • White: 4-point decline
  • Black: 8-point decline
  • Latino: 12-point decline
  • Asian: 6-point decline
These drops were even larger among 18 to 29 year-old men, with only 46% of them pulling the lever for Kamala Harris.

Democrats initially blamed the male flight on flawed messaging. VP candidate Tim Walz revealed that he had been chosen because, in his words, “I could code talk to white guys watching football, fixing their truck.” (2)

But then the Dems launched their $20 million “Speaking with American Men” effort, dubbed as the SAM project, which reached very different conclusions.

SAM co-founder Ilyse Hogue revealed, “Young men also spoke of being invisible to the Democratic coalition, and so you’ve got this weak problem and then you’ve got this, ‘I don’t think they care about me’ problem.” Hogue concluded. “Democrats are seen as weak, whereas Republicans are seen as strong.” (3)

Other progressives were stronger in their criticism. Ross Morales Rocketto, the lead organizer of White Dudes for Harris, chided fellow liberals by noting that men “know the Democratic Party doesn’t really like or respect them.” (3)

Republicans were even more blunt in their criticism. Author Braeden Sorbo advised Democrats, “You don’t need a campaign. You need humility. Maybe start by not hating us.” (4) And conservative podcaster Larry Elder declared curtly, “Libs hate young men!” (5).

Men are known to be lagging behind women in 12 major areas such as shorter lifespans, fewer men in higher education, biased family courts, more severe treatment by the criminal system, neglect of male victims of domestic violence, and more (6).

But some Democrats continue to discount the magnitude of these disparities. Shaunna Thomas, co-founder of UltraViolet, recently claimed, “These issues are just not isolated to men, and it’s silly to try to create a strategy as if it is.” (7)

Worse, Democratic leaders like Michelle Obama continue to vilify men as “misogynists” and to spread falsehoods, such as the claim that research funding for women’s health is lagging behind men’s health (8) – when the very opposite is true. Now, 14% of the NIH research budget is allocated to women’s health, while only 6% goes for men’s health (9).

If Democrats want to reverse their descent into political irrelevance, they first need to acknowledge that men are lagging behind women; second, stop the dissemination of gender falsehoods; and third, begin to speak out on behalf of men, as Democratic governors Wes Moore of Maryland, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and Ned Lamont of Connecticut recently have done (10).
