Republicans Must Get Behind Trump Dividend Plan Or Introduce This Bill

“Because we’ve done so well, and because our country is making so much money, only I can make this promise to you, and here is my promise: if the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate… I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” the President announced during his Wednesday, September 9, 2026 appearance at the recent Republican Midterm Convention.

Democrats quickly went ballistic. “Trump’s presidency is so failed and broken, he is resorting to trying to bribe the American people for their votes,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., posted on social media.

The reaction from green eyeshade Republicans was little better as they decried the idea as a budget buster.

"What I would say is, if you are getting surplus revenue, you should cut people's tax and return it to the people," Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis said when asked about the idea. "What I don't think you wanna do is borrow another … trillion and a half dollars and then just try to flood that into the economy, because that will lead to more inflation. That will lead to more debt," he said, "and more inflation."

Governor DeSantis is usually pretty politically astute, but he missed the point on the Trump dividend.

First of all, there’s a zero percent chance Congress as currently constituted, let alone a future one with a Democrat majority in one or both chambers, is going to do anything to reduce the national debt of about $40 trillion.

Secondly, with all the great news on the economy, (see our September 18 article “Somehow This Message Isn’t Getting Through” for the specifics on that), consumer confidence still lags. PNC Bank reported consumer sentiment slid to 47.8 from 51.7 in the preliminary September report.

A $5,000 “Trump dividend” would provide a substantial boost to the economy by increasing consumer spending on made-in-America goods.

And there’s one other thing to consider – it’s good politics.

A recent Rasmussen Reports survey found that 47% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of the so-called “Trump dividend” plan, including 30% who Strongly Approve.

A majority of voters with annual incomes below $50,000 approve of the “Trump dividend” plan.

The President’s promise to “issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States for $5,000” is at least somewhat approved by 69% of Republicans, 31% of Democrats and 42% of voters not affiliated with either major party.

Hispanic voters are most likely to approve of the “Trump dividend.” And a majority of voters under 40 at least somewhat approve of Trump’s promise to pay a $5,000 dividend… if Republicans win the midterm elections.

Ohio’s Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno got the picture early and quickly defended President Trump’s promised $5,000 “dividend” checks during an interview with CNN, telling host Kaitlan Collins need not bust the budget with more borrowing, explaining the money could come from fees charged to foreign businesses and nationals seeking expedited U.S. visas.

A few hours later, Moreno followed up by pledging to introduce legislation to authorize the payments “so that we can get the Trump Dividend passed immediately after the Nov. 3rd election … because Republicans (and America) will win!”

Moreno rejected the bribe categorization, but said payments would have to be contingent on Republicans controlling both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives because Democrats would never approve it.

“It’s tied to election results because the only way for us to pass a bill without any Democrat support is to do a reconciliation bill,” Moreno explained to reporters for Cleveland.com.

As a Democrat Senate or House leader, imagine Trump’s diehard supporters in the House or Senate offering the Trump dividend as an amendment to every bill, forcing your colleagues to vote “NO” on a $5,000 check to every voter dozens of times.

Republicans would be in an even tighter spot.

The squeeze will be just as bad or worse for Republicans who fail to fall in line on the President’s agenda during the last two years of his second term. Those Republicans who go off the Trump reservation can count on a Trump dividend amendment showing up for every must-pass bill, to be removed only if the rest of the bill is satisfactory to the President.

And the rally threat looms even larger in the 2028 Republican Primary than it does in the General Election.

Among those who voted for Trump in the 2024 presidential election, 71% approve of his $5,000 “dividend” plan, while 73% of Kamala Harris voters disapprove.

Our strong suggestion to green eyeshade Republicans is to either get behind the President’s $5,000 Trump dividend proposal, or draft and introduce a bill making a $5,000 per adult debt reduction payment against the existing national debt, without borrowing any money from the Communist Chinese or a Middle East potentate to do so.

The survey of 1,026 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on September 13-15, 2026 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
