The Fight To Stop Data Centers: American Policy Center Launches Nationwide Campaign

Our friend Tom DeWeese, founder and president of the American Policy Center, sent us this report from his recent road trips sharing his unmatched organizing skills and techniques with grassroots opponents of the massive data centers invading rural America:

I have already travelled to Ohio and to California to help educate activists. I’m planning on more travel. I’m also having conference calls with local leaders to supply ideas and answer questions.
The people are already stirred up and anxious to fight.

Tom DeWeese further reported, “We are witnessing an explosion of AI data centers being built across the nation. Virginia leads with more than 650, with many more in the planning stages. Texas is second with 413 and California with 321.

Ohio has more than 200, mostly located in what were once rural farming areas. The very culture of these communities is being destroyed.”

Tom DeWeese’s note asked the fundamental question: Why the rush to suddenly cover the nation with more than 5,300 of these compounds? The reason is obvious. Their purpose is to collect and store every single piece of information that makes up human society.

That includes each individual’s biometrics and every one of your daily actions like every bank account transaction. And so much more.

They intend to collect this on every single person worldwide. All parked in the data center cloud.

Most data centers require at least ten acres of land for their massive buildings. Usually, it’s much more.

These facilities use a massive amount of water for cooling the required computer equipment. Water shortages and pollution are becoming routine.

The rapid expansion of AI data centers has caused electricity demand to rise sharply, with projections indicating usage could nearly triple by 2030.

Even with such threats to the local water and power sources, the data centers have been growing as the promoters are promising huge benefits for the financial growth of the community.

They promise millions of new dollars for schools, parks and all kinds of community needs. Jobs are promoted as a major perk from the data centers. After all, look at how large they are. They will need huge numbers of people to man them! So goes the sales pitch.

However, the facts don’t match the promotion. In reality the data centers provide very few jobs.

Experience has shown even the largest facility employs fewer than 150 permanent workers. A recent report on Virginia data centers has credited them with supplying one permanent job for every $54 million invested!

We are truly living in the twilight zone! These are the many reasons why AI and its related data centers must be stopped or seriously controlled if individual freedom, free enterprise, and private property rights are to survive.

The very culture of rural communities is being destroyed. Property values are being destroyed. Property rights are being destroyed. This is true tyranny!

Many so-called experts are saying there’s nothing we can do to stop this. AI is the future. It’s here to stay.

NOT TRUE!

Tom DeWeese reports he is witnessing an incredible grassroots movement to stop the data centers. “I have never seen an issue grow so fast – and so strong,” he told us.

Local activists are succeeding in building opposition around the nation. Many planned data centers have been paused while local elected representatives are researching their impact.

In Ohio, the small rural area of St Albans Township, located close to Columbus, has stood up and banned data centers in its area. The trustees said they were carrying out “the will of the people” to preserve the rural character of the surrounding farmland.

That’s an inspiration that we must build on, said Mr. DeWeese. Three other townships around the Columbus area have now taken action to at least temporarily halt the building of data centers. This is after more than 100 were built and the people learned firsthand of the damage they have caused.

Meanwhile, in Southern Ohio, hardworking activists have taken up the fight to get the issue on the ballot. They have until July to collect around 413,500 signatures to make the November ballot.

That would be a powerful first ballot initiative in the nation to vote for a stop statewide. Maine and Wisconsin are moving in the same direction.

In Virginia, a plan to build the world’s largest data center complex right on the edge of the historic Bull Run Battlefield has been stopped by local activists.

In Seattle, Washington, one of the centers of the tech industry, the city council has received over 60,000 letters from residents in opposition to a plan to build five new data centers.

More opposition is growing in Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania, and many more states. Even on social media, hundreds of local pages have been established to bring locals the news on data centers in their own area.

More than 50% of planned data centers are now being paused because of this growing opposition.

So, there you have it! People want these massive data centers stopped in their communities. We’ve never had a greater opportunity to stand and lead the fight for freedom, observed Tom DeWeese.

But the private corporations behind the data centers are determined to push forward and get them built.

The main barrier local activists are running into are ignorant local officials who don’t understand the issue or its threats to the community. They are instead influenced by the corporations through the promises of money and community growth from the data centers.

Your local and state elected representatives are being pounded to by these pro-AI forces to fall in line. They must feel pressure from the citizens – they must fear for their political futures if they go against the wishes of the residents.

We can win this fight! The American Policy Center is ready to help lead it; Tom DeWeese told us.

  • We need to help spread the word to more communities to let them know that they can stand up and stop these data centers.
  • We need to give them tools, information, and tactics. I am working to set up an information center on our website to supply all the details on the growing fight.
  • And we need to help activists in neighboring cities communicate with each other and help them grow stronger.

For Tom DeWeese to effectively lead this fight the American Policy Center must have your financial support.

This is a grassroots fight like we have never seen before. People standing up for their homes and way of life. The very culture of our communities is at stake. Uncontrolled AI and its data centers may be the greatest threat to freedom any generation of Americans have ever faced. This is our chance to stop it. Let’s take back control of our lives.
