It appears the more than 20-day federal government Democrat shutdown is about to end, now that the date of the Leftwing “No Kings” rally has passed. The sudden willingness of Senate Democrats to vote for the House-passed “clean” Continuing Resolution shows once again that the shutdown is Democrat political theater at its lowest.
CNBC reported yesterday that top White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett on Monday predicted the government shutdown is “likely to end sometime this week.”
But if that does not happen, the Trump administration may impose “stronger measures” to force Democrats to cooperate, Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
The comments came deep into the third week of the shutdown, which is dragging on with no clear end in sight amid a partisan fight in the Senate over federal funding priorities, reported Kevin Breuninger.
Hassett said on CNBC that he has heard from the Senate that Democrats thought it would be “bad optics” to vote to reopen the government before this weekend’s massive nationwide “No Kings” protests against President Donald Trump.
“Now there’s a shot that this week, things will come together, and very quickly,” Hassett said. “The moderate Democrats will move forward and get us an open government, at which point we could negotiate whatever policies they want to negotiate with regular order.”
And, there’s another reason that Democrats are preparing to cave – despite the best efforts of the establishment media to spin it their way – they are getting the blame for the very unpopular shutdown.
According to a new Harvard CAPS/Harris poll, most Americans want Democrats to end their disastrous government shutdown.

Here are the key results:
- 70% oppose the government shutdown.
- 65% say Democrats should accept Republicans’ clean, nonpartisan continuing resolution.
- 62% say Republicans “will win the government shutdown.”
- 55% say Democrats are “just trying to please their base.”
Now, here’s another measure of how badly the Democrats are losing the shutdown messaging war: FOX News reported the House Republicans' campaign arm announced it brought in nearly $24 million in the months of July through September of this year.
More than half of that — roughly $13.95 million — came in September, as Republicans were readying for a political messaging war over federal funding.
The National Republican Congressional Committee's (NRCC) $13.95 million haul represents its best September in a non-election year and a 50% increase from the previous comparable September in 2023, FOX reported.
The NRCC is ending the third quarter with nearly $46 million cash on hand and nearly $93 million raised in 2025 alone. The NRCC also outpaced its counterpart, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) in the previous quarter of 2025, raising $32.3 million compared to the DCCC's $29.1 million.
While Democrats have been engaged in this useless political theater, thousands of federal employees (mostly Democrat voters) are being laid off as Schumer’s government shutdown drags into Day 20. Democrats refused to fund the government — now the cuts proposed by OMB Director Russell Vought begin. (Keep going, Russ. Time to end waste once and for all.)
By every measure this Schumer shutdown is a disaster for the Democrats. Obamacare subsidies are NOT a winning issue, they don't matter to anyone who doesn't get them, and "we shut the government to protect tens of billions of dollars in subsidies for illegal alien health insurance" is not a winner in any demographic.
The President and his team have said they want to keep the pressure on Senate Democrats to end their filibuster and pass the House Continuing Resolution to reopen the government. We urge CHQ readers and friends to call their Senators and demand they vote for the CR, and stand firm against the Democrats’ budget-busting alternative.
