Pope Leo XIV has issued a clarion call to Catholic politicians worldwide, urging them to align their actions with the Church’s teachings on the sanctity of life.
Or friends at LifeNews.com report this new message follows on the heels of a recent pro-life message where the Pope emphasized the need to reject “voices of death” and embrace a culture of life.
Pope Leo firmly rejected the false notion of Catholic politicians saying they are “personally pro-life” but voting for abortion: “There is no division within the personality of a public figure: there is not on one side the politician, and on the other the Christian.”
“Rather, there is the politician who, under the gaze of God and of his conscience, lives out his commitments and his responsibilities in a Christian manner,” he said, according to reporting by LifeNews’s Steven Ertelt.
You are therefore called to strengthen yourselves in faith, to deepen your knowledge of doctrine—particularly of social doctrine—which Jesus taught to the world, and to put it into practice in the exercise of your responsibilities and in the drafting of laws. Its foundations are fundamentally in harmony with human nature, with the natural law that all can recognize, even non-Christians, even non-believers. You must not therefore fear to propose it and to defend it with conviction: it is a doctrine of salvation that seeks the good of every human being, the building of societies that are peaceful, harmonious, prosperous, and reconciled.
The Holy Father therefore told them: “The first—and the only—advice that I shall give you is this: unite yourselves ever more closely to Jesus, live from Him, and bear witness to Him.”
In “certain Western societies where Christ and His Church are marginalized, often ignored, and sometimes ridiculed,” he said, “only union with Jesus—Jesus crucified!—will give you the courage to suffer for His name.”

Addressing a global audience, Pope Leo XIV called on Catholic politicians to reflect the Church’s teachings in their legislative decisions, particularly on issues like abortion, euthanasia, and the treatment of the vulnerable. This message indirectly challenges Catholic politicians to uphold the sacredness of life in their public roles, aligning their policies with the Church’s moral framework, reported Mr. Ertelt.
Pope Leo’s pro-life stance is not new, reported Mr. Ertelt. As Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, he condemned abortion and advocated for compassion toward the unborn, elderly, and disabled. In a 2025 homily in the Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano, he declared, “God’s mercy calls us to protect every life, especially those society overlooks—the child yet to be born and the elderly nearing their journey’s end—because each bears Christ’s face.”
The pontiff’s words carry particular weight in the context of ongoing global debates over abortion and end-of-life issues. His call to reject “voices of death” is seen by pro-life advocates as a direct challenge to policies that undermine the sanctity of life.
Pope Leo XIV’s message lends strength to the 2020 remarks of Father James Altman, of Saint James the Less, in La Crosse Wisconsin, who told Catholics that they have a “duty and obligation” to speak out against immoral politicians who support the killing of unborn babies in abortions.
In a video produced by Alpha News, Father Altman insisted that Catholics cannot vote Democrat because of the party’s radical pro-abortion stance. He faulted “gutless cowards in the clergy” for failing to teach Catholics the truth about God and the value of every human life.
“When politics and politicians act in an immoral way, we most certainly do have the duty and obligation to speak up about it,” Altman said. “You cannot be Catholic and be a Democrat. Period! Their party platform absolutely is against everything the Catholic Church teaches. So just quit pretending that you’re Catholic [if you] vote Democrat.”
