The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 34% of Likely Voters believe the conservative movement in politics has been good for America, but 42% say it’s been bad for America and 18% think conservatism has not made much difference.
The good news is only 25% believe the liberal movement in politics has been good for America, but 43% think it’s been bad for America and 23% say liberalism has not made much difference.
More voters think conservatism has been good for the country than say the same about liberalism, but both are viewed negatively by more than 40%.
Perhaps not surprisingly, there is a high degree of ideological polarization. Among voters who say the liberal movement in politics has been good for America, 75% think conservatism has been bad for America. Among those who believe the conservative movement in politics has been good for America, 76% say liberalism has been bad for America.
The partisan breakdown is interesting because, while 64% of Republicans believe the conservative movement in politics has been good for America, only 38% of Democrats think the liberal movement in politics has been good for America. Among voters not affiliated with either party, about 40% say both liberalism and conservatism have been bad for America.
Unaffiliated voters are somewhat more likely to consider the conservative movement to be good (29%) as opposed to liberalism (21%), and are more likely to see the liberal movement as not having made much difference.
And that trend shows up in other polls.
The “gender gap” shows up with significantly more men (40%) than women voters (29%) believing that the conservative movement in politics has been good for America.
Thirty-seven percent (37%) of whites, 16% of black voters, 41% of Hispanics and 31% of other minorities think conservatism has been good for America. Twenty-eight percent (28%) of whites, 16% of black voters, 24% of Hispanics and 10% of other minorities say liberalism has been good for America.
Voters 50 and older are most likely to believe that the liberal movement in politics has been bad for America, while those under 40 are most likely to view the conservative movement as bad for America.
Breaking down the electorate by income categories, 57% of voters in the top bracket – earning more than $200,000 a year – say the liberal movement in politics has been bad for America, but only 38% of those with annual incomes below $30,000 agree.
Among those who voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, 44% think the liberal movement in politics has been good for America, but only eight percent (8%) of those who voted for Donald Trump agree.
